Hi all,

After reading the many posts here, I have finally decided to get a Sony 717(Hope I will not regret). Here are some problems I am facing:

The lcd screen doesn't reflect the correct exposuire of the images. In fact, it is far from it. When i viewed it over the lcd, it appears sharp and brght, but on the computer screen, it very underexposed. How to recitify this problem? I am formally an Oly c2100uz user. Still learning how to adapt.
Also what software to use to view the images?

TKs alot

Use histogram to determine correct exposure.

But my LCD reflects very well what the exposure will be.

Hi Falcon111

From one UZi owner to another, you'll like this camera.

Pictures always look sharper and brighter on the LCD, but you'll find the 717 takes great pictures. At first you will find slow speed shots to have a soft focus. This is because you were spoiled with the IS on the 2100. There is a little bit of a learning curve to remember how to shoot without IS. All of my shots are usually done with the jitter warning waving in my face, but I still get super sharp pictures.

You will also find that you will get a higher percentage of keepers when shooting action shots. The 717 focuses much faster and more accurately than the 2100.

Don't panic with the lack of zoom with the 190mm of the 717 versus the 380 of the 2100. You will find that you can crop in pretty far and still get shots as good as the 2100. The only area where the 2100 will beat the 717 is long range hand held shots. That is where the IZ and zoom of the 2100 puts it over the top.

You will find that initially, if you take a picture with the 2100 and with the 717 you will see examples where the superb Oly lens gets the pictures much sharper and clearer. That will be true on screen, but I think you will see a difference if you print them out. With practise your 717 shots will look just as good on screen.

Use any software you like for viewing. I usually use ACDSee but you can also get Irfanview which is freeware.

Tks for your reply. You are really making me feel better after my first 12 shots are all blur and underexposed. Almost feel like I have made a wrong move in getting this camera.

Interesting advice PFR. I have the c-2100 now and was thinking of very soon getting the f717 I have never printed out very many pictures. Landscapes are my speciality. Are you saying that there will be no better detail in the "scapes" then with the c-2100 ?

I would hope a 5 mp camera will give some better detail on the monitor then a 2 mp camera. ?!?

thanks,
Bill

When you are shooting landscapes, are you zoomed in all the way? At any focal length up to 190mm, you will over twice the resolution on the 717 as you will on the 2100. You will definately see this on a print, but I'm not sure of the difference you will see on the monitor. If all of your shots are normally only viewed on a monitor, I'm not sure if it is worthwhile for you to move up to a 5MP camera.
