I will soon be in the Market for a nikon dslr. My two choices are down to D90-D7000.

Can't make my mind up and save a few pound and go for the D90 body.

I will be buying a sigma 50mm f/1.4 or nikon 50mm f/1.4g, because my main interest in photography is prime lens shooting.

I'm pretty sure I would be happy with a D90 but don't want to think regret not getting the d7000

Please help lol

info on what you like to shoot or do you specialize in something. 1)birding 2)sports 3)no flash dance contests or low light weddings ??? and on and on the list can go.

Many of us here have multiple cameras. I have a D2Hs, D2Xs, 50, 70, 200, 300, 700s, and a 7000 in the nikon line. I have some other brands with fixed lenses for convenience and light duty.

While some of the above and the associated mix of lenses can be called utilitarian, there are some things that would be hard to accomplish with one where another does it with ease and grace.

What do you take pictures of ????

I would think what ever you could use a D7000 for you could easily use a D90 for
the difference would be bugger all

I have a D60 and a D90 , I can use either for the photos I take

I have been thinking of getting a D7000 but all the posts I see from ppl with problems with their D7000 , I might just wait and see what the next up grade for the D300s is

The D90 is a great camera. I traded it in on the D7000 and never looked back.

I prefer the Nikon 35 1.8G to my 50. It is an excellent prime and I would recommend it as a first prime lens purchase.

Agree! There are features that you may get from D7K than D90. But it depends on what you want to shoot. If you don't take Sports, Birds, Any Actions & Indoor activities you may go to D90 and save your money for better lens.

Cheers guys

I would of thought i would be shooting my 3 year old twins most of the time.
Not using flash as often as possible as I like candid shooting aswell.

So mainly indoor shooting and outdoor candid.

Thanks for your time peeps

Wooaaa we are on the same boat then! and I have 3 years old Daughter as well :)

You may check my thread here for your refence http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1034&thread=38185779

I suggest you to pick D7000 as I do, I've sold my D5K (same sensor and ISO handling as D90) and upgrade to D7K which has better high ISO that you'll use often for shooting indoor without flash, especially in low light condition. And of course high ISO let you use higher shutter speed to take your twins in action!
Do you have their pics? I would LOVE to see them!

If you like prime lens (as I do), I suggest you to take 35mm than 50mm lens. 50mm lens on DX format seems little bit tight for indoor, well since D90 & D7000 are DXs, I think 35mm will serve you great! if you have time to visit my thread, You'll see that Magnum suggest KIT lens since it produce sharp image as well. Plus more flexibility that Prime lens don't offer.

Just my 2 cents,
Red Beard

Hi mate.
I'm on my iPad at the moment and can't seem to add a photo due to flash probs.
The twins are dead cute though, and a handful lol.

I once had the nikon d40 with a sigma 30mm, which I loved but found the 3 focus points the d40 have a bit of a pain.

Although I loved the sigma 30mm and would love to get it again I thought getting a 50mm would be better for candid shots.

Thanks for your post.

describing and much more. Its FPS rate is great for action. The D7K is a great blending of 'consumer use' and technical advances. Dont disregard the advantage of having that video capability at the push of a button either. The sensor is excellent. Along with your 30 or 35, strongly suggest the 16-85 VR. No it isnt as fast, but the VR helps a lot more than you think and combined with the D7K's great ISO range, it makes a a fine combo. To really use fast glass you do give up a lot of DOF. I bet you will often find yourself in the aperture range of the 16-85 to get the DOF you need with family shots and general walk around use.
Good luck with your decision and happy shooting!

Go the d7k. You say indoor and no flash...in which case high iso is the next best thing

Fast glass is good, but moving children requires high shutter and reasonable DOF

Don't be afraid of flash though....it's a great tool and doesn't stop you taking "candid" shots

Also, indoors, 50mm might be tough...perhaps 35mm is a better way to go, or I would recommend a fast zoom. (24-70 2.8 ilk)

1. I have a D90, and it's a lovely camera, but you'll probably regret not ponying up for the D7000. The high ISO performance will pay off for the indoor shooting you are describing.

2. I have a two-year old son myself, so some advice on shooting your twins:

a) Consider the 35mm f/1.8 because you may find it to be a more useful focal length indoors. You can always get closer but you cannot always back up. I have the 35mm f/2D and the 50mm f/1.8D; I end up using the 35mm about 3:1 over the 50mm for this very reason.

b) You may not need f/1.4. For one kid, great; for two, no chance. You'll almost never be able to get them both sharp in the same shot at f/1.4. You'll probably find yourself shooting consistently in the f/4 range when they're both in the shot.
