About to buy D100, what lens to start?

Okay, I am very new to this dSLR camera, previous experience is only with 995 and 5700, and old Canon SLR Rebel. I only have about 300 bucks to spend for the lens. I know I am not gonna get quality lenses with this amount of money. At local store, I managed to spot AF 28-85 3.5/5.6 G for less then 100 bucks, while the AF-S 24-85 (or somethin) costs for about 400 bucks. I may spend another extra 100 bucks if the AF-S is way better than the AF in terms of sharpness (AF speed doesn't matter, silent doesn't matter). Any other lens to consider in the same range of focal length (or perhaps from different brand) and price?

One more question, how much different is the field of view of 24 mm and 28 mm with 1.5 multi of D100?

TIA

TIA,

It is not a big different on 35mm between 24 & 28 but I see a little different in DSLR 36 & 42. I returned the Nikon 28-105 and get the Taron 24-135 which I think sharper than the Nikon 24-120 and more wide than the 28-105.

I would go with a Nikon AF 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 D IF. It is a Nikon staple (almost everyone has it). It is sharp, well built, and has Macro. It is an all around great lens. It does run about $325 USD, but has a $40 rebate until the end of the year. An excellent lens for $285 (final cost).

I just opened tamron site, is this the lens type you meant (SP AF24-135mm f3.5/5.6)? Very expensive for my current budget, list price is 726 bucks.

Thanks Joe, hopefully it's available at local store.

TIA,

I too like my Nikkor 28-105 AF Zoom. I got mine at Cord and they had them for $300, then you get the rebate. It is light and pretty sharp. 28mm on your D100 will be a 42mm, so it is not really very wide, but wider than normal. It works for me as an all aroung lens when I don't want to carry a lot of stuff with me.

I wholeheartedly agree with Joe and John's responses. You can hardly go wrong with this lens for starters. It also has a nice macro ability. All in all, you'll get alot of bang for the buck with this one.

Okay guys, you've all been very helpful. I will get the 28-105 then. Thanks all.

Thens seems to actually go for about $400. The list price is just some marketing gimmick to make consumers feel like they're getting a great deal. "Well I'll give you 40% off the list price!"

Tamron 24-135 SP 3.5-5.6. Good lens. Not that expensive. Link below.

Or the Tamron 28-200 XR 3.8-5.6. Another good lens. Slightly cheaper. Slightly smaller. Link below.

Like all zooms, these trade off some quality for convenience. If you can get away with a "range finder" for a while, I'd suggest the Nikon 35mm F2.0 AFD. Very small. Very Sharp. You'll need to do your zooming with your feet though. :) Link below. It looks like B&H is "out of stock" on this one right now.

Thanks for the url. I think 'll consider tamron 24-135 as well, since it's still in my budget. Hopefully local price doesn't differ to much with online price.

Thanks

I would get the 24-85 AF-S G. This lens is sharp for the money. As with other AF-S lenses you can manually focus the lens if you need to so you won't miss a shot. Here's a couple of links to assist with your decision:

Thanks Guys, I too am contemplating getting the D100 and need a good first lens, this one sounds real good. Can I ask is it fast enough too shoot something moving and small? I would use it for photographing Model airplanes. Both flying and static. Along with static full scale planes. It sounds like a great all around lens.
Thanks Joe

I've gotten a lot of sharp pictures out of the 28-80 G. I was in the same place you are needing everything after I bought the camera and not having a dime to spend... I basically bought the 28-80 and stuck with the 96 Meg CF card that I had until I could afford a micro drive and a few more lenses. Overall, I still use the 28-80 quite ofter as it really hasn't let me down for landscape shots yet.
