Hey

I am planning on buying a 5 II. I am wondering if it is worth getting it now or wait for the new version. Will there be that much of a difference for me to wait? I really could use it now but will wait if the new one might come out within the next few months.

Thanks
Sean

I am patiently waiting, but enjoying my 7D immensely in the meantime. There are many capable cameras available today. You will shortly have responses like: "The 5D2 will continue to take amazing pictures after the 5D3 is released". While this is no doubt true, the big difference I have enjoyed in migrating from T2i to 7D relates to handling (including AF, FPS, etc.). I have bought and returned three 5D2's over the last 6 months because while I wanted to realize the highest IQ I could afford, I simply could not get satisfied with the handling relative to my 7D. I will make the leap to the 5D series only once the handling takes a step in the 7D direction. I am optimistic that this is a reasonable expectation for the 5D3 and have therefore decided I can wait.

I have a 40d and love it. I really want to get a full frame and I have some up comming events that I could use it and make some money. I am buying the camera and a few lens with it so I want to get the best prices. If I wait I have to get one of the lenses asap.

If your reasons are purely economic, I am confident you could make money with your 40D and save a large pile of cash. If you've decided you want to upgrade, I would guess there is almost no stopping you. Once I get the bug I almost always go through. The only caveat is that lately i have been returning my purchases within the 20week return window;). I will say that buying the 5D2 kit a few times gave me lots of time with the 24-105 on my 7D. As a result I ordered the lens and have been enjoying it to no end.

Nobody knows how long we wait till the 5D3 is announced, let alone available for purchase. Recent events in Japan may delay this even further. How long can you afford (or stand) to wait?

Buying a used 5D2 may be the best option today. When the 3 is announced and you decide you must have it, you can resell the 2 and probably not lose too much. And if you decide it's not worth the upgrade, you have 5D2 and saved some cash.

How long after they announce a new camera do they normally have them for sale? I will only buy new. I learned my lesson some time ago. Lenses used ok but dslr I want full warrenty and extended. They do not make things like they use to.

Mack offers extended warranties for used cameras I think up to 3 years from date of purchase. They are not overly expensive. I've had a used camera fixed using one, glad I had it. Just food for thought...

I think Canons are typically for sale within 1-2 months after announcement, the rebel series usually sooner.

My advice is to wait until the introduction of the 5D3 or whatever Canon will call it and then buy a very capable 5D2 for about 30%-40% less than you would pay now. The likely areas of improvement for the next generation are an articulated OLED viewing screen, an improved autofocus system, and better focus and viewing features for video. Resolution might rise slightly, but 21Mpixels of the 5D2 is certainly plenty for almost any application you might have in mind. With the introduction of the next improved models likely to be announced at Photokina in early November, you won't have to wait long. Since Photokina was such a bust last year, look for some very interesting products this year. I am anxious to see if Canon will push its 1Dx to 30 Mpixels to counter Nikon. Also, Sony has been coming on strong in recent years and now it is a three-way horse race in the pro equipment sector.

Is there a Canon now that might come close to what the future will hold for the next version?

You can wait forever - there will always be something new and exciting coming, and a horde of internet denizens happy to tell you to wait.

Canon only make DSLR announcements twice a year (at most). They won't be making another announcement until at least September, probably later, and it may not ship until the end of the year. And they may not announce the 5D Mark III - it could very well be something else (the "over-due" 1Ds Mark IV, for example).

It is not a case of "a couple of months".

If you have a camera to use while you wait, and you are happy with it, then sure, wait as long as you want. If you don't have a camera at the moment, then buy one, and take photographs.

I have to send my 40 in soon. I have noticed a dark circle when I shoot anything pure white in the middle of the leftside. With this I am a little worried about shooting and comming up. With the spring upon us I really do not want to miss out on fantastic shots.

Dark circle? Like a blob of something or literally, a cirlce?

Probably just dust on the sensor, happens with all DSLRs. Look into the Copper Hill cleaning method and do it yourself...will save a lot of $$ and headache of mailing the camera off.

What "next version" of the 5DII would you be waiting for? The one that will sell at an unknown price with an unknown delivery date and unknown features, unknown specs, and unknown differences between it and the 5DII? Why would you wait for that one?

If you knew that tomorrow the 5d3 would be available at the 5d2 price, or that the 5d2 would be $1000 less, your choice would be obvious. Similarly, if you knew that the 5d3 would be released in three years, be four times the prices, and the 5d2 would only go up in price with the Yen until then, your choice would be equally obvious. It's likely somewhere in between those two extremes, and only you can determine your tolerance for possibly buying too soon or going without for too long.

The 5d3 will probably ship some day. It will likely be better. Until it's announced, no one that you would want to trust can say how much, if those improvements are important to you, or when you might be able to buy it. As with most technology products, the longer you wait, the more you'll get for your money (either a 5d2 on sale, used, , or a 5d3 new), but the less you'll have it.

Are cameras getting so good that improvements (5D2 --> 5D3) are increasingly incremental? Analogous to "last year's stereo could reproduce up to 15K hz, this year's to 20K and next year's will reach 30K hz" - but most people can't hear above 20K. This would argue for getting the 5D2 now. I use a perfectly fine (for me) 5D1 that you could get for half the 5D2 price but you may understandably require a brand-new purchase.
