Best price+quality/Gig firewire drive

I recommend the ADS Pyro firewire case (www.adstech.com). It's a little bigger than other cases (because it can also accept CD writers, etc), but the big benefit is that you can put any ol' harddrive you want into it, so you aren't restricted by the case/drive combos out there on the market right now.

Thanks, but my current benchmark is 120GB LaCie for $269.

It probably gets cheaper.
LaCie also has a new 250 GB for $549. which is $2.20/gig

See this link: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=77&e=4&cid=77&u=/mc/20021120/tc_mc/lacie_announces_250gb_firewire_hard_drive

The 120 GB for $269 is $2.25/GB.

Probably does drop a lot more. Also check http://www.apstech . They are owned by LaCie and sell pretty much the same peroduct without the LaCie label usually for about $20 to $40. less.

They are listing one to be available soon at http://www.apstech.com/prod/item.cfm?cat=1&item=1594 for$480 which is $1.92 gig.

I have purchased from APS Tech and been happy with them.

Hope this helps.

Randy

Before purchasing one of these new monster hard drives (200GB!), you should think seriously about the possibility of losing that much information.
Not a pretty thought is it?

I would suggest considering a DVD burner before spending that much on a hard drive.
my 2 cents,

---------------

Very soon Fire Wire is coming out with new Fire Wire which will be TWICE as fast as the one on sale at the moment ( in 6 weeks time at a guess).

Also USB 2 is around now,so dont get anything with USB 1.

ALSO make sure that the drive has got the latest Fire Wire AND USB ports at the same time on the hard drive.

Computers can be easly upgraded to the faster drives.

I always have all images on 2 different physical disks.

I have the LaCie. I think HDs might be safer than DVDs?

You might want to just burn to CD-R for low cost storage.

If you need a firewire wire HD, you might want to get a IDE drive and purchase an enclosure. Assembing this yourself is not hard, and you can save money.

If you have space in your PC or Mac, you can add a second IDE drive for even less.

I bought ADS I1394 drive kit. Effectively it's a Firewire case with an IDE controller inside that can talk to ANY drive. Then I put a spare 60GB drive in it.

Not really an option for my data.

Hi Uwe,

I have the LaCie 120gb. It's very quick, very sleek and I would recommend them to anybody with Firewire on their PC.

I also have a LaCie 30gb Pocket Drive for portable storage. Excellent. USB and Firewire. NO drivers needed and no need for a poer pack with desktop machines.

As you have guessed I am a bit of a fan of LaCie products. Good quality, well designed and sensibly priced and, no, I don't work for them....

Regards,

Richard

firewire enclosures are about $99 at Fry's. Just add that on to whatever you can get a drive for. Assembly is pretty easy
