The numbers of 717s affected by the focussing problem, given on DPReview are misleading. I checked my UK camera and it is not on the list, which seems to have come from Sony Italy. If you go to Sony Uk, and follow the links through, digital still camera questions/ knowledge centre/digital photography/cybershot/717, and then pick the top question about the focussing problem, you get a list of numbers of affected 717's that is not the DPreview list, and my camera bought from Jessops in Middlesbrough, is on it. The numbers are
1710001 to 1724200
1850001 to 1851100
1851152 to 1851232
1851365 to 1851450
1860001 to 1861526
1861530 to 1861532
1861534
1861536 to 1861540
1861544 to 1861545
1861547 to 1861548
1861551 to 1861792
1861801 to 1862064
1862088 to 1862099

And finally, Middlesbrough Sony Centre claim to have sold loads of 717's and have told all the buyers that no UK cameras are affected. They are wrong and are misleading their customers. I asked them to look at the number of their only 717 in stock but they were just not interested.

My camera was collected by a courier organised by Sony Uk at Heathrow, and was returned fixed, about 10days later. And contrary to a previous posting who claimed that all 717's have a Lazer pattern which is off centre, mine did, but now it has been back to Sony, is is dead cenral.

[Apologies to thoise bored by the 717 saga, but I think this information is important, and how else to disseminate this?]

Hi ..

thx for update, I would say this list is European, not UK .. I have 1850280 and bought it in Czech Republic - not yet fixed.

what I am really interested in is if all HAF fixed 717 have centered HAF. Mine is very off-center. I am going to fix HAF next week but I don't if it will and if it has to fix also off centered laser. (Clear is that laser is not coming from center of lens so it has to be off-centered - question is how much is acceptable. I called to SONY and they said there's no specification for that - I wouldn't believe it)

Regards

Petr

Hi Ken,

I'm also in the UK and my camera is on the list you provided. I'm debating whether or not to send the camera back. I've seen several people on here complain that after the fix was applied they experienced problems with the internal flash overexposing their photos. Have you noticed this at all?

I haven't noticed the HAF problem yet, but I'm sure I'd notice a problem with the flash immediately!

Any advice on this would be welcome.

Stephen

I'm with you Stephen. I haven't had any problem and I don't want any! Also I couldn't bear to be without my camera for 10 days!

I just found out that (i) a similar list does exist for us folk out here in Asia, and (ii) my camera s/n is on the list.

But no matter how hard I try, I cannot seem to emulate the HAF problem. Meanwhile flash exposure is great - certainly compared to my previous BOCS impaired F505V. So provided that there is no time limit on getting this HAF problem fixed, I am going to sit this one out and await the jurys verdict.
Just my 5c's ;-)

I haven't been able to find a shop that will look at the serial numbers but I do get told by our local Jessops that the two 717's they have left in stock are from the original three that they received as a first batch, so must be on the list. So they have only sold one 717 since they received them.

Mind you, at £899 I'm not surprised.

F717 (currently at Heathrow)

Hi Ken,

I bought my F717 from the Sony Centre in Middlesbrough and I have the HAF issue on my camera (serial 1860xxx). I can consistantly demonstrate the problem as well but as you mentioned, when I contacted Sony Centre they showed no interest at all - I have since dealt directly with Sony via the Heathrow centre, my camera is to be picked up tomorrow. Fingers crossed!!

Cheers,

IanS

Sorry, I have only had the camera back a fews days and have not had time to test all its tricks. And I only had it a short time before that. If anything bad appears, I will post.

Sony tell me that Sony Centres are nothing to do with Sony, not part of the Sony organisation. In which case we are all being conned. I tried to leave the list of 717 numbers with the M'bro Sony centre, but they just were not interested. But you really should have tried the Jessops price match thing. It was no bother at all, and they matched UKDigital.com at £749.> > --

My camera is on the S#$% list, so how do I check it for errors.
Do you know of any link to instructions to check the camera.

I work for the company that imports sony to Iceland so it is not far for me to go and fix it, but I want to check it first!!!

Hi Oskar

As I understand it, it goes like this. Set the hologram function to auto. Take the camera into a dark situation where the lazer just comes on, not a totally dark one, but just enough to set off the lazer. Take a shot, preferably close rather than distant, but not macro. The resultant picture will be slightly out of focus when closely examined. One poster claimed that his camera was under these conditions focussing 4" behind the object. So in his case it would only be apparent for close subjects.

That is my understanding, but I have to say that I bought my 717 for its ease of handling and the pictures it can produce, not the gadgetry. I had my camera mended basically so that when it is sold, as in a few years it will be, I could claim that the problem had been corrected. But I doubt that it would ever have given me a problem in real use.
cheers

So the problem is only when the camera uses the hologram, not in lighter conditions. Is that right??
