I have been looking around for something to replace my G10. I am not looking for a SLR, cause i have one, but something in the G10 range of i can pick up easily and take pics. For me the G10 falls into an odd range of more then P&S but less then SLR. I have been looking at the Olympus PEN E-PL1 , Panasonic Lumix and even eying the Leica and the upcoming Fujifilm FinePix X100. Not sure what to go with as i have been out of the loop of photo taking for a long time and would love to hear from those who have had experience with these or anything in the range of what i am looking for.

I assume that you mean a Canon G10, not a Panasonic G10.

After the G10 Canon dropped back to 10MP in the G11/G12 for better high ISO performance and this has been followed by all the other manufacturers with "premium" compacts: Nikon P7000, Panasonic LX5, Olympus XZ-1, etc. Unless you want the better high ISO performance or HD video, I don't really see much point in upgrading from your G10.

The obvious upgrade to consider is to a mirrorless camera like the Olympus and Panasonic M4/3 models, the Sony NEX series or the Samsung EX series. These have DSLR sized sensors and exchangeable lenses, but are much smaller and lighter, especially if you get a pancake lens.

The Fujifilm X100 has an APS-C sensor and fixed 23mm f2 lens and would seem to be pretty good for street photography or the like. Leicas, other than those that are modified Panasonics, are out of my price range.

I hope that this is some help.

thanks for the input. honestly there is nothing "wrong" with the G10, its in perfect condition, i was just never that happy with the color saturation also someone has been bugging me for the camera since i said i was looking to upgrade and they need a camera.

I'm not interested in a 4/3 camera - just mildly curious. Since 4/3 was recommended in this thread I thought the person recommending that format would know about available lenses. If it's true that all available lenses are really quite WA, as I suspect, that's a serious drawback to these cameras.

Bill, check the list of lenses kindly posted previously. m4/3 lenses are far from being all wide angle. There is a good and quite inexpensive 45-200mm from Panasonic - this is the equivalent of 400mm full frame as you are probably aware. There is also the Pana 100-300, 14-140 and Olympus 50-150 (or similar range). True, no native prime tele lenses yet, but with suitable adapters which are available quite cheaply you can mount any number of lenses of different makes and manually focus them, or use lenses made for the original 4/3 cameras (using an adapter), many of which do AF on m4/3.

Where did you come from before the G10 ? And what do you want to achieve ? And where are you going that needs something better than your the G10 ?

Thers a lot of pro's that have got the best of what is needed to shoot the best of what is required , and guess what a lot of them tote as a backup !

So this is something that couldn't be fixed by boosting saturation when shooting JPEGs, or just shooting RAW and developing with saturation to taste? Or do you mean you're just not happy with the sensor?

g12 or epl1 wouldnt be bad choices. g12 won a gold award. ive had a g10 and luved it. g12 would be a no brainer. id you want to change lenses epl1 is great too. i know ive got one. epl1 can be had for a good price these days about 400usd. r

A lot of people seem to love the Oly pens colors so it would be worth taking your memory to the store and firing off some shots to take home and look at. They are small with the right lens but you can go from 7-300mm 14-600 FF Equivalent if you want to.
