Saw a couple of penguins get in a minor scrap over some bait someone through them. Neat to get so close to these birds. The eye on the one was neat as the lense was half covered and in the next burst shot it was fully covered.

Gerry, nice pics but I think you meant to say pelicans, not penguins. :-)

Geez, Gerry, false advertising! I was all set to witness, vicariously, a fight among penguins and you only offer pelicans. For crying out loud, where are the penguins? :-)

Looks like this calls for a trip to Antartica, or the zoo, whichever is your choice. Better bundle up for the former, though.

By the way, FWIW, pelicans can be nasty birds. I once saw a video of some people feeding water birds (geese, ducks, pelicans) and an unfortunate pigeon was trying to grab a bite of bread crumb when a pelican snatched it up in its bill and swallowed the pigeon in an instant. I've never looked kindly on them since.

Sounds like the old limerick, "What a wonderful bird is the pelican,/ Its bill can hold more than its belly can,/ etc etc.

Actually, I believe they're very smart birds. In North Carolina, I've often seen a flight of pelicans soaring along the beach until they come to a high-rise building, where the sea breeze has to blow up and over the building. The pelicans circle in the updraft until they've gained 50 or 100 feet, and then they head off to the next high rise, all without ever beating their wings.

Thanks Erik, I'm totally embarrassed about the title. I don't know what my old brain was thinking of. Just no way to go back and edit it after hitting the post button. GRRRRRRR
I hope you don't think I was "piling on" ;)
