I'm so unhappy!

Pete:

I have used mainly PSP 7 exclusively for most of the past 18 months. I love its red-eye removal tool, and find its interface much easier to work with.

I only upgraded to Photoshop 7 recently after having purchased Peter iNova's ebook on the F707. Since purchasing that book, his PS tutorials are the first I've run into that make life easier for someone like me (who has been totally intimidated by Photoshop). I don't like PS Elements for the same reason.

Anyway, I agree with you about Neat Image, but I feel it's performing its best when you have a way too noisy image (higher ISOs). I tried it on this image just to see what it would do with it. Even the publisher of Neat Image says that the software is better with severe problems.

I, too, like PSP's edge preserving smoothe tool. I also like using the median filter for noise removal. No matter which way you go, noise removal is inevitably going to give things a waxy look, it just comes down to how much of a trade-off you want.

Peter iNova's got some PS actions built into his ebook, and there's one dealing with noise. I can't wait to try one of them out.

Good luck and happy shooting.

And here's the original:

Pete D:

I made some changes to your image. Let me know what you think.

I did the following:

1) Ran the image through Neat Image to remove the noise;
2) Ran the unsharp mask in PS7 with the following settings:
Amount: 300%, Radius: 0.5 Pixels; Threshold: 1 Level; and,
3) Increased saturation by +25.

Here's the orginal:

And here's the one following my changes:

I don't know, but if this helps at all, my Dad has an iMac.

Didn't see an answer to my question, but when someone asked for a
full size image of your shot, you only showed an 800x600 shot.
That would mean you aren't even using all your pixels in your
photos since the 717 shoots images at a full size of 1920x2560
which would help even more on any noise when you print at the size
you want to print.

Still doesn't make sense. Well.. then again if I print it out @ that res then walk 2 meters away .. take off my glasses (i'm -750 on both eyes).. sure.. it'll look good. = )

Ok.. seriously.. i've tried 8x10 with my s110 elph.. and i can already begin to see the pixels. How can a 640 x 480 vs my 1600x1200 be any better?

Here's the 8x10 that I took in indirect sunlight in my house just now and then the original 640x480 that my dad used to print the 8x10 from. The print is a little redder and of course my Sony made it even more apparant :-), just doing a quickie though just to show that the quality of the print was good.

Hmm.. it's hard to tell since the image is small (the pic of the print) but from the sample u put up it looks pretty good.. the pixels are definitly not noticable a meter away.

But, still pretty decent considering he started with a smaller photo than the 8x10 and used a regular HP inkjet printer.

I did as you suggested and it worked really well thanks. The
interesting part is that I examined the hue map. It looks like a
patchwork quilt in the grey areas.

Also, its amazing that the 717 seems to have such trouble
with hue in the grey areas.
You'll see that a lot in JPG-compressed images. :-) The second I saw the pic in your original post I knew what was going on. I'm not sure how much to attribute it to the camera software though. But who knows? ;-)

Try using a higher-quality setting (lossless, if you have the storage space). I realize that's not an option for everyone so use the channel splitting method if all else fails. (And pray that PSP 8 comes with some sort of PS-like actions!) :-D

I'm glad the suggestion worked for you, Pete.

Regards
