Took my son to get mail on his scooter, and get a few pictures on the way using the 50mm MK1, here are two shot for C&C. The pictures are not as good as what I see here, but post them here for C&C is the best way to learn. Thanks :).

Well I like the pictures. The background has a nice bokeh blur so that your son stands out. I like the red (probably bottle brush) behind him. Overall good pictures.

Portrait orientation can often be your friend when taking portraits. ;-)

Perhaps take an environmental portrait of him on his scooter (puts the helmet in context).

(and see if he'll tighten up that chin-strap) :-)

Keep shooting any chance you get, that'll help the most.

They look good to me. A couple suggestions though. Why not open up the aperture more to get more background blur and try "candid" type shots. You don't have to hide behind the bushes just let him do what he's naturally doing instead of posing for you while you take the shot.

OK, will try to remember that.

Ok, will try that next time with a zoom lens, since I am already on the street with the 50mm this time :)

It is actually his brother helmet :)

I actually been trying to do that when I have a chance, here is one example, I think people at the haircut place think I am crazy :)

Is there any suggestion for this shot? One question for you, is that true the picture on here is less sharp than on your own computer? because that how I see it. Thanks R2

Thanks Carlk, your suggestion is my ultimate goal, but still working on that thought :)

Ok, I should have done that, I just forgot to open up the aperture after I stop it down to take a picture of the flower very close the minute before.

Oh, cute shot. You really captured the moment.

Those bright colors around his head are somewhat distracting. You may be able to do something about that in Post.

A person has to click on the "Original" in order to accurately assess the image. Otherwise there is too much compression going on.

IQ looks OK, but keep in mind that all images need sharpening before posting (or printing). Also, I would turn off all Noise Reduction in-camera, as it will rob your image of detail (and sharpness). I prefer to process noise in a program like Noise Ninja.

Cheers,

It's always a challenge shooting outdoors when your subject is in the shade and there is bright sunlight in the distance or directly behind the subject. I try to avoid these situations. If I can't than I darken the bright spots and lighten the subject during post processing. Usually it's tough to fix both and get the colors right so with those photos I turn them into black and white.

Your son is wearing a new helmet. It would be nice to know why. Because the background isn't that interesting in either shot I'd crop down more on both.

Keep shooting. I shared more pictures online when I first started. It forces you to try a little harder and take the advice and criticism from a bunch of strangers. Friends and family will only tell you they are all terrific.

One more thing . . . with my kids I notice they tend to repeat whatever they are doing. If I see a good potential shot I'll try to make my way over to a good spot to shoot what they are doing candidly.
