Thanks to dean j kenny and Vincent!

Using +4 is a little too close to the butterflies. Try using a +2 instead, coz the distance is more comfortable and magnification is good enuff.

Does it means using +4 and +2 = +6 or +2 only ? I suppose the higher + number should have higher magnification ? How you customise the White balance, using a white sheet of paper ?

Thanks

Oh, I meant using only a +2. For taking butterflies, the magnification need not be so high. A +2 with 6x zoom is sufficient. Whats important is distance. A +4 will give you around 22cm, which is a little too close at times. A +2 will be better at around 30-35cm.

Hi, Hector

Your photos have shown the beauty of the butterflies and the caterpillar especially the color and the sharpness and the light (not too hard, not glaring, correct exposure).

I really want to try to use 285/SB24 (too expensive) for my photography. Actually I have decided to buy one from Foto Guide last week but Nelson keep saying the 285 used in the digital camera is not the one he has. He told me that there is another 285 which has been bought over by one company and has been modified to suit digital camera. Is this true and is your the one? Thanks...

Hi Ahhua,

Thanks for the comments!

Oh? I've never heard the 285 actually has different makes. Mine doesn't have any indication, not even the Made in Japan thing you mentioned the other time. I bought mine from Alan Photo. Maybe you can try getting there, coz i saw they have quite some stock available. Btw, how much did Fotoguide quote you?

Hi, Hector

Alan Photo quoted me SGD 170 long time ago (4 months ago)

But Fotoguide quoted me SGD 145 recently. (I have never bargain with Nelson because he always give me the best price)

How about your? Where did you buy your Omnibouncer? At how much?

Actually I am thinking to buy one more flash for better lighting and slave purpose.

Thanks...

Hi Ahhua,

Nah, i bought it for $140 5 months back too. And i heard recently someone bought it for 135 there. They always overquote, so try bargaining to let them know you know the price.

I got my omnibounce from Fotoguide. $28.

Hmm.. any model in mind?

Sorry to come to this thread late Hector, but once again, your photos are a delight. You are very talented. Your use of flash is excellent. I just can't seem to produce flash shots up to your standard. I think I need to practice a lot more!

Thanks again for the photos, they are truly beautiful.

I agree your use of the flash is excellent. Tell us something about it. Do you use the presets (color codes) on the 285? And if so, which settings do you use with which apertures? And while I'm at it, another question: do you put the flash on the camera or do you keep it on a bracket? And do you put it straight ahead or tilted upwards? (I tend to put it straight for macros to light the area in front of the lens.)

Hi Pieter,

Thank you for your comments!

For all my insect shots, I'm using the M mode. Usually 1/4 or 1/16, depending on available sunlight. Aperture setting depends, coz taking butterflies are a little different from other insects. They're indicated on my pics.

The 285 is mounted on the hotshoe. My flash head is always tilted, and angle can varies from 20-90 degrees, depending on existing sunlight too. And oh yes, i'm using a Stofen omni-bounce with the flash to diffuse the light all around. Direct flash doesn't quite work out for me. Its too harsh and althou the subject is light up, the background will be very dark.

Hector
