Why are Nikon slashing prices so much on DSLR's these days?

1. if I buy from canada will nikon honor the warranty?
No, don't think they'll even work on it if you pay them. Nikon Canada will though.
2. I guess my credit card will be charged an extra amount for international transaction.
Not for internet purchase, only foreign ATM use.
3. what about the taxes? do they charge taxes in canada for internet order?
There's no import duty on camera equipment from Canada, if that's what you mean.

D4 and D400 are a given end of this year

D5100 is highly likely rumor in a few weeks.

There are rebates galore going on as Nikon competitiveness is less than best at the moment.
I think Nikon is expected to release a number of model refreshes this year...D400, D800, D4, etc..and yes, their EVIL would be the first of these to appear. But it feels too early for them to be discounting...dunno...

In the past, Nikon tended to keep their prices VERY steady - think D90 and before.

And they would certainly NEVER have done discounts over extended periods of time, for new models, and for ALL their lens line up!

Something's going on - I just don't know what, but it's got to be big.

Clearly, retail sales are booming again in the U.S., in Germany, and in many places in Asia.

But even if the economy were bad, then why would competitors NOT discount, while Nikon discounts?

I haven't seen Canon, or Panasonic, or Olympus, or Sony, do discounts on ALL their lenses, coupled to extended discounts on the bodies.

Clearly something's going on - but what?

I mean here in expensive Switzerland, this large-scale dealer is having a special at chf 995.- for the D7000. This seems "as long as stocks last" but still the normal price before that, was about 1'200, which is clearly less than eur 1'000. Sounds like that retailer of yours is making hefty margins...

Too much stock sitting on the shelves. Just look. Not enough demand. Also, this is the fiscal year end month in North America. Sales numbers must be high by year end.

Hello,

Could you tell which store have the D7000 at such price? The few I've checked after your first post were still in the 1'300 CHF range.

Thanks in advance!

My theory is the end of Bing.com cashback dropped camera & lens sales a lot, so they needed some rebates. I don't think the prices with rebates are anything special though. Everything was cheaper a couple years ago.

I found a brand new D5000 at a local store body only for $429. I almost bought it on the spot. Still tempted to go back and buy it but I've got some bills I need to take care of before I go spending again. I think if the D90 drops I might just jump at it, it's the camera that has everything I've ever wanted in a DSLR.

I just got mine from Amazon today. D7000, 70-200mm f2.8 VR II, 24-70mm f2.8 all for US $4400. Sold my Canon T2i kits to get this. This deal is to hard to give up and I am D800 ready with all these lens purchase. This will not possible if I stick with Canon. I am very excited.
