More SD9 shots & some comments

Does the SD9's ability to render detail down to the pixel level
ALSO make it more susceptible to camera shake and movement (wind,
etc). In other words, would a non-Foveon camera take a pic of a
ABSOLUTELY still object and a pic of that same object with the
SLIGHTEST (and I do mean slightest) movement - and the 2 pics looks
very much the same - due to the bayer sensor not rendering detail
to the pixel level anyway.

Whereas a Foveon Camera (SD9 for now) will show a CRISP pic with
ABSOLUTELY no movement and a 'softer' image with even the SLIGHTEST
movement?
I think it is true with any macro. Of what I read for macrophotography, when you are taking images that is at least 1:1 and larger, a tripod is almost a required equipment. If that is not possible then at least somehow steady the camera. Many will even suggest a remote or using the timer just to prevent shutter shake. My experience with the F707 on this is even using a tripod I always get more sharp images when I use the built in timer for the shutter instead of hand press.
Just something we have been wondering about - because this camera
really seems to reflect the slightest wind movement, or operator
movement.
Try taking the same shots with your other camera and see for yourself if this is true. Of course, assuming your other camera doesnt have image stablization. I know the F707 is not. ;p

Hello Everyone!

It was a busy week for me - work wise. And I was not able to take
many pics at all this week. I had hoped to get out during my lunch
hour - as that is the only time I can snap photos during the week
in the daytime - but I had too much going on and didn't take any
lunch breaks! =(
Hi Sam

My main concern with the SD9 is its quality at night and higher ISOs.
Could you please attempt some high ISO shots and/or long shutter
speed shots? like a night shot with 30 second exposure?
Perhaps 30 seconds at each of 100, 200 and 400 ISO?

Sam,

Thanks for the additions in your photo gallery! I enjoyed them, and as usual there are some excellent details to be seen here and there! I can see the JPG posterization problem on some of your samples. I hope Sigma will fix this with a future software update.

I was happy to know that Sigma USA will take care of the dust in your camera! This is a relief! When you do send it in, then I really hope it will not take too long time before you get back your camera.

Cheers :-)

Is that possible?! It only works with 15sec at ISO100.. right?!

Sorry to trouble you Sam. I know you posted a link before but I
have read every link and still cannot find it!. Where can I
download the software for the raw files? (Anyone else have a link?)
Here you go Roger. This is the site where I put my pics - and the
software is Windows compatible only. It's a long story, but even
though the Mac software is on the CD, you have to upload it from a
Mac to the server, not from a windows machine. Sam is also windows
and I'll bet the software he uploaded was the Windows version (i.e.
the "Setup" icon), not the Mac version (the "Install" icon), which
can't be seen when you are looking at the CD in windows.

Well -

Even though it was cool (about 65 degrees) and VERY windy and dreary - we decided to head out and take a few more shots....

We never saw the sun - so these new pics were post processed to bump up the exposure... Some shots are at ISO 100 and some are at ISO 200.

We have added about 13 new images in all - and may add one or two more later tonight....

That wind was whipping us around - we were shooting mostly on the coast - or near-by - and it was blowing a good 20-25 knots.... Hard to keep the camera still - tripod or not... =)

I hope you enjoy them....

And the bumping up of the exposure - does that equate to using a higher ISO? Or is it more complicated than that?

Any questions, please let me know - and, as always, if you would like to have the RAW file posted on any of them, we will be happy to oblige.

=)

Sam, this is great! I'm having a show time over here!

Oh well, I could really need a much BIGGER monitor though, and it should view at least 2268x1512 pixels :-))

Great shots, Sam.

It seems your camera setting was stuck on f/5.6 for most of the shots. I dont know if I should blame it on the lack of sun or your Sony F707. But For now I'll blame it on the lack of sun. ;p

I cannot wait to see some of those f/16 and much higher real landscape setting shots.

We took a lot of the pics in P mode - or Auto mode - to allow the camera to help make the decision - since it was sooo overcast -

And then we did S mode - shutter priority - to try to keep the shutter speed up high enough to keep from showing too much camera shake, wind motion, etc -

Part 2 -

I typed more - but it didn't show - how strange -

Anyway - I was saying that we did try to boost the underexposed shots from Shutter priority mode - and they looked better - but a little noisy.

Maybe I should try to run them through NEAT IMAGE or something similar.

And I am planning on taking Tuesday off - it is Tony's birthday, and we wanted to maybe go into the Everglades and do some landscape shots and some animal shots, etc.

I just hope the weather will cooperate!
