This week, the Tokyo Sky Tree becomes the tallest tower in the world, standing at 604 meters. The uniquely-shaped landmark is still under construction and will be completed at the end of the year at a final 634 meters.

I went out and shot some photos of this piece of history for you all. I brought my Nikon D700 with 14-24mm f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.8 lenses. Here are the pics:

Congrats to Japan! Now I have to return to Tokyo and check out the view from there? What did they do to make it earthquake proof?

It looks more utilitarian in design to me, than designed to be aesthetically pleasing. If they had stopped at the most bulbous part, I'd day it looks like a water tower. Everything about that looks like something you'd see inside a light bulb.

If the Burj Dubai now Burj Khalifa isn't technically known as a tower, then OK, the TST might be the tallest tower. The BK stands 828 meters.

Under Basic Facts it says:

6. Burj means Tower in Arabic language. (emphasis mine)

that crap they built in Dubai is like 800+ meters. I dont see how this one is the
tallest in the world....

in any case, it's apparently better to keep building this megalomaniac crap instead of give housing to millions of people without the most basic needs.

Well, the tallest tower / structure in the world is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and stands a massive 828 m (2,717 ft).

I first saw it before it officially opened in Mar 2010 when visiting my daughter who was working in Dubai.

It is a very impressive structure that sits in a great area of luxury apartments and shopping malls and places to eat, they also have a great light / fountain show.

Here is an image I took of it last year with my GF1:

Well, I just learned something. Thank you.

Undercrimson- Are you okay after all the devastation in Japan?

I assume this tower held up against the earthquake, as well? It's astounding how the country withstood the earthquake better than any other country could, yet the floods were so massive and tragic.

We hope only the best for you and your country...

To the best of mu knowledge the OP is neither from Japan or living in Japan... He seems to live in the USA from his profile...

Regardless, unless he was smack in the middle of the path of the Tsunami, he will be just fine... Much to the contrary of what you have read, Tokyo is not now, nor has ever been in any kind of imminent danger such as they have experienced in the Tohoku region...

Most of the world still does not seem to grasp that the damage and danger is limited to a VERY small portion of Japan - perhaps less than 15% of the land mass but 85% of the mass hysteria...

A tower that tall is certain to strain under the power of a 9.0 quake, would it not?

Towers don't have 'floors'.

Some buildings are called 'towers' because they are tall.

Sometimes, 15 story residential complexes are called 'towers' just because they stick out of the skyline.

Real towers, like the CN Tower in Toronto (the previous record holder for tallest free standing structure), and the Canton Tower in China have a long elevator ride from the 1st floor to the 'observation deck' high up in the sky, with no 'floors' in between.

there are lots of categories for 'structure'.
I suggest checking wiki to find out more about these distinctions.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_and_structures_in_the_world \

if i remember correctly, sometimes the buildings of the world trade centre in NY were referred to as 'Tower 1' and 'Tower 2'. But they aren't towers.

Even though the quake was strong and felt in Tokyo, the 9.0 (Japanese scale) was measured at the quake but the level was less in Tokyo.
