Only a few here for you... deciding which ones to embed was difficult. I hope you enjoy these. There are many diverse genras of images included. Everything from nature and wildlife, to snapshots and documentary photos.

Ahhhhh... it sucks being home.

These lil' buggers only came out at night and chirped like birds.

Documentary photos shot from moving bus.

Documentary photos shot from moving bus.

Um... a crab.

Lengthy exposure, done bracing the camera against a tree.

This is me... look how manly!

This is my fiance, Kate... no you can't have a bigger pic of her! ;)

Yes, that is a bar in the pool... did I mention that it sucks to be home?

I walked out on coral reefs and rocks to grab this reflection as the sun set behind my back.

The sea... so violent.

You can view all 78 photos on my Pbase Gallery: http://www.pbase.com/joeh113/jamaica_vacation&page=1

There are alot of really spectacular places and people there. The gallery really is worth a look due to the many types of photography I was able to do. My favorits being the documentary photos of people living their daily lives in a very poor country.

It was nice shooting things for myself instead of a client. If you see something you like or dislike - please comment. Thanks for looking.

(All images shot with D100 in NEF with the Nikkor 17-35 AFS or 70-300 ED.)

Thanks for sharing your gallery, very nice. I love the Caribbean and my wife will have a vacation there early January (I'll surely show her your gallery to get a taste!).
BTW, Kate is a keeper!

Nice shots Joe. Thanks for sharing. It is non-stop raining here, so your photos were a nice change of pace. If you ever get tired of lugging that heavy 17-35 around let me know...

Joe,

Don't you know it's winter where some of us live? Very cool gallery!

I especially like your reflection and other water shots. Handheld
even -- bravo!
Winter - Ugh! We left Jamaica in shorts, and arrived in Philadelphia to fleece jackets and pants... depressing.

It was a challenge to not have a tripod for the water shots. I did alot of bracing against trees and such to manage the low speed shots. Thanks for looking.

I'm in the same boat with the rain now myself. It was horrible seeing the tornado damage on CNN while we were down there. We were worried that we would have to fly through that system, but fortunately it cleared up just in time for us to have clear skies on the way home, only to be welcomed by rain now.

BTW - you would have to pry that 17-35 from my dead hands... ;-)

Thanks Boris. I used a combination of two lenses on the entire trip. I used the Nikkor 17-35 AFS mainly, and I also used the Nikkor 70-300 ED. To see which one shot what, open up the exif link in the Pbase gallery.

To answer your PS question - yes, everything I display gets run through Photoshop. I shot in RAW and ran my initial processing in Bibble for exact exposure and white balance. In photoshop, aside from resizing, color managing, and changing the color space for the web, I run a mild sharpening action to keep the files as crisp as possible at such small, compressed sizes. Though I normally don't do alot of cropping in post processing, I did crop several of these simply because I had such a limited selection of lenses and opportunities to take certain photos. For example - the frog image was shot with the 17-35, being that I did not have a macro lens with me, I just cropped my desired composition after I shot it as close as possible.

Thanks for looking.

Great shots from the bus. I have taken that bus ride between Braco and the airport a few times and have never gotten any decent shots from the bus, although I certainly tried. But, of course, I didn't have a D100 then either.

Thanks for sharing your vacation photos, Joe. They look top-notch! I checked all of them out on pbase. Makes me wonder how beautiful they must be in larger sizes, but I can understand posting them this way. We are just moving into winter here, so Jamaica sure looks inviting.

Nice album Joe. Great color saturation. I gotta get outa here and go some place warm. Thanks for the little taste.

Did you use the setting P? Just wondering if it was done with out of the box settings, cause most people complain about the D100 out of teh box settings, and it seems taht the Sony f707 shoots great shots straight out of the box.

Also which firmware are you using, and what lenses...this makes a big diff as well.

Thanks. That bus ride is certainly an experience. I lost a good many shots to motion blur. I was shooting without looking through the camera so people wouldn't see me taking their picture, and did alot of panning. I credit my getting the shots I did to the 17-35 lens (for width and AF speed) and a good panning effort. ;-)

Thanks Craig. I'll be making a few into prints this week, and several will see 10x15" size. Alot of family and friends wanted to see pictures, so the small files were mainly to appease them. Thanks for looking.

Thanks John. I was pleased with the range of colors I was able to extract from the raw data and enhance in PS. I'm always aiming for that Velvia/Reala film look with my colors. Yeah, warm is good. This cold rain is getting a bit tedious.

No - you won't catch me dead using Program setting (P) on any camera (unless there is no choice, of course.) Most of these were shot in Manual (M) or Aperature priority (A). I have not seen any camera capable of giving you it's best using the out of box settings, including the 707. You will get alot more out of the camera if you take control of it in as many ways as you can. All the settings for color space, tone, contrast, etc are there to be customized to get the best results possible.

I agree that if you want a camera to shoot in P mode, the D100 is not it. It's not a point and shoot-esq camera like the 707. The 707 is made to be used both as a high end camera, and a point and shoot. It's undoubtly a good camera, capable of great images, but it's in a market where they will have just as many advanced users as they have users who will never change a menu setting. The D100 is not a camera for the kind of people who don't want to change any menu or exposure settings... but because of it's relatively low price, it is in the market for people like that to afford.

The lenses I used were the Nikkor 17-35 AFS and the Nikkor 70-300 ED. The 17-35 AFS lens offers some of the best optics available from any lens manufacturer let alone Nikon. It is a high end (dare I say 'Pro grade' lens.) This was my most used lens on the trip due to it's AF speed with the AFS motor, and width flexability ideal for 'street shooting'. The other lens I used was the Nikkor 70-300 ED, which is a mid-grade zoom lens. Good optics, and a convenient reach. Nothing more or less with that lens. It's my 'convenient' lens.

The firmware I have is V 1.01.

hi, Joe, it seams you have a lot about nokon lenses, whats your opinion of the 28-100G f to be used with the D100, and the Sigma 28-300???

Thanks and again, your shots where GREAT!!!
