I had a terrible time with Optical. It clip the reds on my machine, which caused tremendous problems for me until I realized what was happening. Colorvision has still not come up with a solution. I contacted them back in march about the problem and they said they would let me know when they had a solution. After a couple of months I contacted them again. Their response was...we'll get back to you when we have a solution. Still no word. I went out and bought Colorblind Proveit, and I'm as happy as a lamb! It works with my Spectrocam, but can also be used in visual mode. I've tried the visual mode and it works great too. You do have to be able to be good at looking at color for it to work....but hey, this is all about visual any way.

OptiCal is better than PhotoCal & works well with my LaCie 22". Laptops are notoriously difficult-to-impossible to calibrate. There are more expensive options that are better.

Between EzColor & ColorVision: We tried both & chose ColorVision. EZColor seemed more accurate re: gamma & gave us a brighter screen, but when we profiled the printers it seemed less accurate re: color. Since it's easier to tweak gamma than color, we chose ColorVision. No problems with clipping reds, using LaCie Electron Blue III monitors & Epson 1270, 1280, & 2200 printers.

Between PhotoCal & OptiCal: PhotoCal is fine for one monitor or for matching fairly new ones (I got what seemed to be a perfect screen match between LaCie & Trinitron). OptiCal is recommended for making several monitors match, especially older ones w/ less range of luminance adjustment.

No experience calibrating laptops.

kirk....yes i do saved on my other machine.(i am pretty sure) (the link to the tutorials)

thanks all. i am going to look into the other systems along with the optical. i also use the 1280 and the 2200.

the interesting (lucky i guess) thing is that i have had no problem getting accuracy from the 1280 and the 2200 with the D-60 and before that a fuji 6900z (on a KDS 21" none the less).....until i went to an Epson 'print academy' seminar and set up everything like they suggested. after doing so everything looked like junk. i re-set PS 7.0, the print software, deleted the paper profiles, recalibrated the monitor using adobe gamma and 'presto'...back to normal and very usable color. granted i do have to tweak here and there.

but...i really do want to be sure and as tack on as possible.

i know that i'll be taking chances with the LCD/laptop...but i will use it (tethered) more for looking closely at a product photo or difficult lighting situation, or for a client...than printing.

thanks again.
