I suppose they meant that it is not so easy to blur the background (which seems to be important in portraits) with compact camera. Well, the blur ain't everything and you have a wonderful example here.
 
They've turned out very good indeed.
 
that's the reason I like XZ-1 lens even more than EX-1. compacts are getting serious.

on the other hand, the Japanese lady was shot at pretty slow 1/25 sec shutter speed. This Hungarian gentleman has a sharper look (again, XZ-1 f/2.5 @ 24mm) :

 
Poor exposure and/or/DR/color rendition...
this is not a masterpiece but a sample shot, there are not that many of these around. in this particular case sharpness is the only thing that matters.
