Focus issue and your serial number

I just picked up my D7000 a week ago. I haven't been as precise in my testing the autofocus as others have documented on this forum, but I'm very satisfied with how it's working out of the box with both the 35mm 1.8 and 18-200 using magazine print as a test subject. One minor fine tune was needed with the 35mm. Much of my shooting are candids with pretty wide DOF anyhow. That being said, I'm a firm believer that manufacturers (pick one) fine tune their products during production. I thought it might be interesting to see if we can correlate the AF issue with Serial number. Mine's 30654XX.

My camera I got 5 days back from Amazon S # 30752XX and some lenses are ok while the new 16 to 85 Vr is not sharp and testing is very time consuming and

you can easily take 400 to 600 pictures testing, I know others will disagree but
we are Nikon's field lab!

Nikon should give us 40% off voucher on the next lens purchase to make up for our aggrevation!

3061496 and perfect with all lenses!

Ordered body only from Wolf Camera in November.

Mine is 601* , purchased a week before xmas.

I immediately noticed a backfocus issue with sigma 24-70 2.8 AF-D (confirmed on d200 and d80). Then I realized my Nikkor 35 1.8 also struggled a bit at max aperture, so put all my lenses through the usual test (focus on flat target with slanted ruler on the side) and (sometimes surprisingly) found most of them needed around -10 AF adjustment.

This said, I came to think that such an adjustment of around -10 or less is really marginal and in most cases will not result in visible mis-focus, unless you use a wide aperture at close distance or shoot subjects moving towards you at wide aperture (that's how I saw the backfocus in my 35mm: the AF always lagged somewhat behind).

Knowing the principle behind phase detect AF, I actually wonder if those who claim their camera if perfect have done the test or simply judge from the pictures they took: I sincerely doubt there are many combinations of lens/camera which would not benefit from some adjustment. Of course, if you do not see a problem in your pictures, you don't need to bother doing it...

There is a difference between "perfect" and no backfocus in my mind. I test my lenses with a LensAlign Pro and very few of my lenses don't benefit from a minor fine tune on both my D300 and D7000. By "no problems" I (and I assume most) are saying no "major" back focus issues that are easily noticeable in everyday photos and barely correctable with MF adjust.

The serial number (S/N) of my first D7000 was in the 3800s and my replacement D7000 S/N is in the 20,400s, with both S/Ns starting with the number 5 (to designate cameras in the Canadian market )and both had the original firmware. The new one focuses much better in terms of AF modes rendering similar IQ to that of LiveView, and much smaller fine tune offsets are required on my 80-200 f2.8 as well. My original had no hot pixels and I haven't checked for any on the new one yet.

No problems and I have tested it to the best of my ability.......one prob, I wanted a blue or green one and they sent me a black on, I'll live with it :)

3075406
No problems from I can tell. Only tested the Sigma 17-50 2.8 on it so far.

3079xxx

Just got mine yesterday afternoon... Did some simple testing with the Nikon 70-300vr (only lens I have right now) and ended up with a -4 adjustment... I'd call that minor and acceptable... Need some better weather to give it a proper field test... So far up to this point I'm happy... :)

no AF problems, no hot pixels, no overexposures, everything works as expected...
ok the full time AF-F during video sucks, but that's a general problem ;)
