Popup flash as controller at high-speed sync possible on 60D/7D?

Hi there,

I've been playing around with flash on a 60D and a couple of off-camera flashes - and got the setup to work after some RTFM'ing :) However, it looks like that popup flash cannot trigger external off-camera flashes in high-speed sync mode (faster than 1/250) Is there any setting to override this? Is this option available on D7? Or am I pretty much stuck using a 580EX in the hotshoe for access to high-speed sync flash? (another pound on the camera I could really do without)

The manuals for the camera and the Speedlites are not very helpful here...

You are correct. There is no HSS with the built-in controller - same goes for the 7D & the 600D.

I think Canon decided that the controller was going to have modest range anyway and the range outside with HSS would have been far less still.
There are 2 light weight options for HSS outside;
1) the ST-E2 &

2) using a 5xxEx from an OC-E3 clone and then suspending the master unit either from a strap around your neck or from your belt. Canon's original OC-E3 is too short for this MO. Cheers, Donald

No matter the options to get flash control it's still visible (or infrared) and so if you decide to move a slave in an area where it doesn't see the flash then you are buggered. It was a good move on the part of Canon to enable this but it would have been far better to have gone the route of radio frequency control instead. But that's not an option and probably never will...at least as a Feature for current and future models.

So, best bet is to start looking at radio triggers instead. Yes it willl cost extra (you already do have remote control but, like I said, it's via the flash/es) but considering the extra 'reach' you will have it's probably worth it. PLUS...if you set flashes to Manual mode and have the proper cabling between flash unit and trigger then you should not be limited to Canon flashes only.

Pocketwizards are good but ?worth the high cost?. Check out Radio Poppers instead. They have the technology to do High Speed.

Peter, thank you for clearing that up.

Donald, thank you for suggesting the ST-E2 & 5XX on a cable options. I may have to stick with one of those until I can spring for radio controllers.

Cheers.

Very interesting! And suddenly I might have four strobes I can use :) I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "proper cabling," though.

The last time I checked (just now :)) Radio Poppers were a bit more expensive than PW. Maybe I was checking at the wrong outlet(s) (B&H for PW, Radiopopper.com for RP)

Thank you for your suggestions!
