Hi all,

I'm looking for advice/examples on using the 85 1.2L II lens with Canon's 12mm or 25mm extension tubes. I have a 100 IS Macro for macro work, so the extension tubes on the 85 would be for close-up still life, nature and portraits.

Cheers,
gL

i am occasionally using mine with a 25mm ext. tube

the DOF is literally not existing anymore when using an ext. tube. so heavy stopping down is required and you still lose quite a bit of light.

cheers

I'm weighing up whether it's better to go with the 12mm or 25mm tube. For close-up head shots I'm thinking the 12mm will be just fine, and would give me some versatility with my other lenses as well. Would be interested in seeing samples of photos taken with both and the 85L (and 35L and 135L as well).

I have the combos 85L/35L/135L and both tubes, and might have a couple of samples somewhere (unabole to locate these at the moment), but haven't used the combos much since the working distance interval with the tubes is very narrow, especially for the ET 25mm. The 85L + ET12mm is the best option, I think, and will give you some unique possibilities with extremely narrow DOF.

Edit: Found one with the 85L + ET25 I think, but at f16:

Cheers,
Eyvind

Hi - thanks this is great info. I'll probably start with the 12 and see how I go. Can always add the 25 later if I think I need it.

anyone else have samples of the 35/85/135 with the 12mm?

Cheers.

You know you can buy a set of 3 Kenko extension tubes for a fraction of the cost of two Canon branded ones. There are no lens in an extension tube.

I have to second this. There is absolutely no reason to buy either Canon tube. The build quality of the Kenko set is as least as good as the Canon tubes, and they are much less expensive.

(I have a Canon EF-25 II and a set of the Kenko tubes. I bought the Canon a couple of years before Kenko came out with EF-S compatible tubes.)

Good tip, thanks. I was thinking about using Kenko tubes but was worried about reports of inferior construcntion and lack of weather sealing. Then again, the 85L is not weather sealed either...

Neither is the 100mm f/2.8 macro weather sealed.

I am seriously wondering what this combo would do for you that the 100mm Macro wouldn't ... other than enable close-ups with just one lens.

The extension tubes are a good way to increase the magnification of the 100m Macro beyond 1x, though.

Extension tube will allow you to shoot close enough to have head shot to fill the frame on a full frame sensor. Other than that and if you really want the thinnest DOF I agree with you there is nothing that 100mm macro could not do.
