Request for Tokina 11-16/Nikon 18-55 landscape comparison

Wow, great shots! I'm debating between accessorising my D3000 (wide angle and tripod) vs saving for the d7000 and sticking with my sigma 18-200 and 35mm 1.8 prime....you're making the case for the side-angle much stronger!

I'm not nearly motivated to make it over to Copley square in this cold just to shoot...does that Tokina come with a built-in heater for your hand?

Haha, if only, I shot for about half an hour with full finger cycling gloves on before I retreated to a cafe to warm up. The only cold-weather feature is the Tokina is large enough to hold when you can't feel your hands at all :D

If you do decide to build on your current kit, be wary that the D3000 doesn't have an internal focus motor and therefore won't AF with the Tokina 11-16. I would recommend the Sigma 10-20 HSM lens as a solid budget performer with an internal motor.

Wide angle plays into perspective instead of a flat scene. You shoot 3 flat scenes and stitch it together, you still have a wide shot of a flat scene.

Wide angle allows you to (as you say) position to include all the elemends of a large landscape. Including perspective giving foreground mid and far off information.

Hopefully that clears things up as to what I meant.

Stitching will not give you perspective, which is the strongest argument for a super wide.
Position gives you perspective. Focal length gives you angle of view.

The wide angle lets you put things in the foreground at a much larger size.

Even at 18mm you can't get in the hill and a large flower

Flowers in landscapes is one of the real focal points

I saw my foot and moved it.
Then put it back to try to show how steep the drop was.
It still doesn't do it justice.
It was almost straight down

Laughing!

Thank you very much for your time and efforts. I don't see how I can pass up the Tokina.

Are you saying that wide angle gives you more depth of field, so that you can get appropriately sharp foreground, midground and background?

If not, sorry, I'm not sure what you meant

I can get depth of field from ANY lens. DOF being how much is in focus.

I am talking about DOF WITH field of view and distortion being used to give depth in a 2 dimensional picture. All 3 coming together to give a sense of depth.
