I don't normally download free software because of problems with spyware and viruses
i just wanted to make sure iit's a safe download

It is safe to download.

There may not be such a thing as a free lunch, but there is such a thing as free - and competent - software. Still IMO not as refined as PhotoShop.

Don't worry about Gimp. Like all the other GNU programs, it's a very competent software in it's own right. As a previous poster noted out though. It's not as good a Photoshop but it's also £600 cheaper :-)

For photography, Gimphoto is a good way to start with gimp. It has a number of plugins that are also available for gimp, but packaged, so you don't have to go looking for them. It is based on a older version of gimp, so once you get into using gimphoto, you might move to gimp to get the benefits of the newer code. You'll have to then track down the plugins and install them for gimp. There are a lot of plugins for gimp that aren't in packaged Gimphoto as well, so sooner or later you'll probably want to add more plugins and they might need the newer code anyway.
