Hi,

I am preparing to foto trip in Iceland by the end of April. Do anyone can give some tips what to take: I mean the nessesery photo equipment

What do you own and what is your interest? How long will you be there?

If I was there besides normal tourist pictures I will take opportunity to shot some Auroras Borealis so you will need a tripod for this and lens that you can set manually for infinity and sharp at f2.8. Dusk in these parts of a world is spectacular so you may need to adjust your day to set this time for shutting. Back up stuff and most important proper clothing for this climate.

I planning to stay there 7 days and take some trips to see glaciers, geysers, waterfalls and maybe volcano and I am wondering if I will need some filters as well? At the moment I am using UV only.

I went there last summer and spent a week. Presumably you will also be in the vicinity of Reykjavik. I took what equipment I had my dslr, 10-22 and 28-75 ( or whatever it is without looking). I have bought a macro since then and would have taken that too if I had had it then. I didn't take a tripod.

The best thing my wife and I did was to hire a guy with a 4x4 who took us out for about five hours. Not only did he show us things in the SW of the island that we would never have known about or seen, but he could drive us off road to places a hire car would not have got us. Apart from that do the Golden Circle and see the geysers. It is an amazing place and I will definitely go back one day and see and photograph more of the island.

A French guy wrote on this form a year or two back and produced a site of his pictures of the island and they were/are amazing. If you can't track it down mail me on this forum and I will locate the site for you. There is nothing to see at the volcano by the way.

There's really nothing about Iceland that makes it different from a photographic equipment perspective than most other places in Northern Europe.

The weather will be cold, possibly windy, and it will probably rain most of the time so a waterproof coat and bag may be a good idea. I always travel with a tripod, and so consider that a basic "must have".

A fast moderate wide angle prime is always useful for interior shots, where the lighting may be poor.

Watch out for the next volcanic eruption, which might dwarf the last one.

Iceland is a conspiracy of the Digital Cameras companies and the memory cards manufactures, everyone from 3 years old to a 103 take photos it was a doctor order.

It is so beautiful. so what ever camera/lenses you have you will find the suitable objects and subjects to photograph.

In over four years of living in Iceland, I've seen maybe two people with an umbrella.

The problem with using umbrella's here is with the rain; since it usually rains sideways due to winds. And the winds are almost obligatory addition to the rain here.:)

To answer Kasia:

You'll need to take a tripod, widest lens you own and warm/weatherproof clothing.

The only filter I use is ND specifically for waterfalls/running water, so I guess it's up to your personal preference whether you need it or not.

BTW, Aurora's are not so common sight in April in my experience. At least I haven't seen one in springtime. I've actually seen them in late August a few times, but mostly in late autumn/wintertime.

I hope this helps.

Jules,

I remember seeing the pictures you're talking about and you're right, they were great.

I can't remember exactly but I may have seen them on Pbase.

I found it.
This is the link to the relevant thread

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1005&message=34605518

and on that first page you will find the link to Day 1 and the Index and you can take it from there. There are a lot of stunning pictures. make a cup of coffee, settle down and enjoy.

Thanks, Jules

Yes these are the pictures. Guess I saw them here and not at Pbase.

Twenty five years ago I rode around Iceland on a bicycle. Fantastic country and very hospitable people. I took an OM 10, two fixed lenses and 10 rolls of Kodachrome. Those were the days! Some of the pictures are still selling though.

Filter-wise, I remember the air was so clear you won't need to worry about haze. Super-sharp light (when it wasn't raining).

Enjoy the trip
