Just took the plunge. Ordered a Mac Mini with 8gb ram from B&H. Will use with an older, but serviceable Samsung monitor. Also got the magic mouse and wireless keyboard. We are full time travelers in our 45 foot motorcoach so space is a premium, but I just couldn't swallow twice the price for comparable specs in a laptop. My wife is going to kill me.

Great chuice, I have the older & the newer intel mac mini love 'em but one can do more on the intel models. I was told the intel models were more like 64 bit in PC talk???
There were 64-bit PowerPC chips (the PowerPC G5s, used in PowerMac G5s, and some iMacs).

There were several motivations behind Apple's move to IBM. Some of these are Apple's stated reasons; others are guesses:
  • IBM was slow to deliver mobile G5 chips, at a time when demand was shifting from desktops to notebooks. This made Apple's notebooks less competitive and made Apple want to look for a supplier with a more attractive road map.
  • IBM had just gotten contracts to supply video game chips for all three of the major video game consoles. This was making Apple a small-volume fish in the IBM customer pond. I.e., they didn't have much leverage to get better treatment.
  • By contrast, desktop and notebook CPUs are Intel's bread and butter. You've got the whole PC market (not just yourself) providing Intel with the incentive to keep providing you with the kinds of chips that you need.

that laptop sure would have been nice when youre sitting out side under the awning on a nice summer night with that cool drink sitting next to you and looking at DPreview.com.. Youll like that setup really well. wish i could put 8g ram in mine.

I have a late 2009 mini. I upgraded the HD to a 500GB 7200 RPM when I got it and recently upgraded to 8GB ram. (You need the latest firmware to go to 8GB with this model.) My photos are on an external FW800 drive.

The little machine performs very well, inclusing with Lightroom. Performance only slows on processor intensive tasks, e.g., rendering 100% previews in LR and using Focus Magic under Rosetta in PSE.

I have just bought the mac mini server. I was going to get the mini and upgrade it but was told I'd be better off with a mini server. I just use it for everyday use as I have a macbook pro for traveling and a mac pro for editing but the mini holds its own.

I've hooked it up to two Samsung HD Syncmaster monitors which look nice but not as crisp as supported monitors. I've been on a few forums and there's quite a few people with this gripe.

Love my mini. I bought the 2009; then jumped on the 2010 soon as it came out. I got the fastest processor available, and love the fact that ram is user-accessible. My 8gb upgrade is in the mail. Even at 4gb I'm editing in Final Cut Express with ease.

I'm sold on the green - it maxes out at 85watts and idles at 10!
