After a few days photographing stuff (mostly cats) around the house just to see how the camera performs.

The camera seems to perform very good at least around the house. So a day after an rain/ice/snow stop I made the hour drive up to Spring Mill State Park. I was hoping for some ice photos but all they had was just a dusting of snow. When I drove down to the bridge over the small lake I did see a bunch of birds. So why not put the DA*300 on the K-5 and see how the camera does on bird photos.

The sun was just coming up over the hillside. The temperature was 12F degrees and there was a mist coming off the lake. It was fun just being there. No to see how the camera does.

It was a fun morning and time for lunch at the State Park Lodge. Then east to where I hope to see some sandhill cranes (see part 2).

Thanks for taking the time to look. Comments are always welcome. If interested more photos are on my Flickr gallery at:

Great shots Dave, thanks for posting. I'm sure you'll enjoy your new K5.

I really enjoy the first picture in particular.

They're all excellent, but photos #4 and #6 are truly beautiful.

Looking good Dave - I like the nice natural colour tone.

Thank you for sharing this very nice series.
Thanks for looking and taking the time to comment.
Congratulations on your K-5, Dave. You will see, it is a superb camera, great dynamic range at low iso, a very good high iso capabilities.
Yes, I am already seeing that I live the increase in dynamic range.

I am really enjoying the K-5. So far I like the increase in DR and the improvement in SR. It seems to stay active as long as the metering is active so there is not that spooling up time.
I really enjoy the first picture in particular.
Thnaks for the kind comment.

Thanks for looking and commenting. The colour tone is better from the K-5. It might have to do with the increase DR and the extra bits (14 bit) of information.

Anyhow, I do love the IQ from the K-5.

Great shots

These inspire me to go out and shoot with my K-5 more. As it is I admire it on the bookshelf more than I shoot with it :)

This is beautiful Dave !

Dave - these shots look almost as if you'd set out to showcase the wide DR on your K-5. It's a nice set regardless of that, though. #6 is my favourite.
Thanks for taking the time to look and comment.

It is always difficult getting these birds under direct sunlight, even if it was just after daybreak. It seems like all the dslr cameras I had before I would also had to underexpose to keep from cliping the highlights on the birds. With the K-5 it handled the range of lighting in this case really good. I am going to enjoy this camera.
PS - I like the cranes too.
Thanks!!

Seeing the sandhill cranes was an real fun exprience. I hoipe to get back there before they all fly north.

Nice shots, seems like the K-5 and DA300 is a great combination. Did you have the K-7 earlier?
Thanks for the kind comments. The K-5 and the DA*300 is a nice combination.

Yes, I had the K-7 before I got the K-5. I had the K-7 for 18 plus months and have over 20,000 shots from it. With the K-5 and K-7 sharing the same body it was easy to just go out and start using the camera. The handling and the butttons all seems to be in the right place. When I upgrade from the K20D to the K-7 it took a while for me to get use to the button placement.
