Today, after months of research and thinking, I bought a new DSLR, a Pentax K-5 with the Pentax 18-135 lens.

I wanted the camera and lens to be weather resistant, and I wanted good image quality.

So far I have just taken a few test pictures, and I have only begun to read the manual, but I feel happy! :)

The K-5 is a very good camera. I know I really like mine.

Enjoy your new camera and post a few photos from it.

Well, yours has to be one of the loveliest posts here for while.

Congratulations, and when you feel ready please post some samples for us to enjoy.

I hope the K5 does everything you hoped for, I have not been able to stop thinking about it for several months! :)

The image is more important than the equipment.

Thank you, Stefan!

Right now I am reading the K-5 manual. I have just taken a few pictures indoors for testing. Soon I will decide which RAW format to choose, DNG or Pentax' own.

For the K-5 and now for the K-5 I have been using DNG.

Thank you, DLBlack! It is good to know that you use DNG.
When searching this website for "PEF DNG" I found a lot of threads discussing the matter, and after reading the most recent of them, I think that I will try DNG, with RAW + JPG in the beginning, then hopefully RAW only when I have learnt more.
I have Adobe CS3 and may consider upgrading that software.

Congratulations on your new K-5. I hope you have wonderful success with it. I expect my new K-5 to arrive tomorrow and I am quite excited.

With the K-5 I shoot JPEG most of the time actually. For my needs the output of the camera JPEG engine is more than sufficient. For a tricky shot or something I think "Hey I might want to get this on PPG" I shoot RAW (DNG).

Oh and I do love the K-5!

I am used to shooting RAW only, but I will check the K-5 JPG quality and think about it.
It is very nice to hear that you love the K-5! :)

I don't mean to push a strong opinion on the original poster or any other respondents. I'm just saying this for any among the general readership who might be new or might not have decided.

Given that a 1 Terabyte hard drive is $79 now and will take most of us years to fill even with raw files, there are really only two reasons not to shoot either RAW or RAW+JPEG. One would be at times when you need the highest sustained burst rate for sports or other motion capture, in which case shooting JPEG-only maintains much higher buffer speed. The other would be if you're convinced you will never -- now or even in the future, ever -- want to work with your old images using Camera Raw.

Once you experience in Camera Raw the extra ability to improve shadows and overall image balance in so many ways, plus the extended ability to do noise reduction with less unwanted side effects, you may really wish your previous shots included a raw version, even if at the time you only filed it away as an original. It's like keeping the negatives from your old film shoots rather than throwing them away. There really is a major difference in what you can achieve with marginal shots that are almost-great and just need that little push, when processing raw files. Even if you don't care now but might get into it later.

Today, after months of research and thinking, I bought a new DSLR, a Pentax K-5 with the Pentax 18-135 lens.
I'm not sure what camera you've owned in the past - but coming from any other APS-C body; the K-5 feels like a luxury model. The build, the super quiet shutter, the awesome OVF, the 7fps, and the general speed and handling make it nearly 'perfect' from a Pentaxian POV. You've also got yourself an impressive, fast focusing, WR zoom lens ... a great starter with the K-5. Enjoy the camera - I've loved my two K-5's so far.

Keep the happiness by exploring what you want to show, what you see. I am a gear head, but yet I honestly can say I like photography the art equally. The PC just ties it all together for me. After two years I still enjoy my K20D.

Congratulations on a great Pentax camera!

Andy, I had a 6 year old Canon 20D DSLR. Now I wanted greater dynamic range, better low light capability, and weather resistance in a small DSLR. I think i got it with my new K-5 and my fine 18-135 lens. :)

I see! You really enjoy photography/art as well! :) in your top 10 you have a B/W pic of a lady sitting on some steps - superb! As all in that collection! Also there are winners in most of your collection and to repeat you do love pushing the shutter button and working for the pic. ;)
