Pentax - midrange model

Pentax is missing a midrange model.

I would love a Pentax K-6, I think it would fit perfectly between the K-5 and KR.
Not enough space between K-5 and K-r to fit a new model IMO.
Body should be the same as the K5, but specs could be reduced to the excellent 12MP sensor, 4-5 frames a second, not full HD movie and so on.
Apart from weather sealing and the second control dial, you just described the K-r.
Something similar to the Nikon D90 and Canon 50D-60D price wise around 700-900€. For people who just can't justify to spend the extra for the K-5 and wouldn't need the 18mpx anyway.
The K-5 (16MP btw) can already be found very close to €1000.

In 3-6 months, it will be your €700-900 dream camera so you won't have to wait too long for your wishes to be granted. ;-)
Any other takers, thoughts, etc.?

I think, if Pentax wants a decent marked share the need a new midrange model. (and some decent telelenses) Can't think of any reasons why it should not be possible, as they have the 12MP sensor and the body on hand. Well not that I have real hopes ... :-(
Pentax 2 DSLR range makes sense and they would have to place one higher on the map to be able to justify a 3 models line.

Thanks for your new comment ... liked it much better.

I tried different/owned brands, in fact I use Sigma foveon as well. Selling my gear and buy a new one would cost a lot. I am in both systems heavily invested plus many m42 takumars. The pentax for the occasions were I need to rely on the camera and the foveon for well lets say I like the images better, but my first camera the Pentax Spotmatic 1000 was more user friendly ;-).

I like the layout of the canons but I don´t like the new sensors (except FF), somehow the punch is missing(DR+Colours).

Nikon has a good concept, my girlfriend had once the D80, but I find the layout of the buttons and the strong AA filter not very appealing.

Well and Sony... if you ever had a Pentax body in your hands you just wouldn´t buy the cheap plastic stuff anymore.
So Pentax with all it faults is imho still the best :-)

So you are suggesting a mid-range model? H'mmm.

If you count total potential sales of K5 + Kr and then add, lets says its called K3, a mid- range model, what is the potential for new extra sales of a K5 + Kr + K3 lineup, compared to just Kr and K5? My feeling is that Kr to K5 is a logical step up, but this is only my opinion.

I wonder if adding a K3 would be worth the cost to the distribution chain?

Would the K3 simply be take away options from the possible upgrade path to a Kr?

The image is more important than the equipment.

lol. I'm afraid but I agree with you ;-)

For example this picture from yesterday. The weather was very bad: a dim mixed lights and snow fell. K-5, ISO 6400,1/125sec, 120mm and slightly underexposed shot...

But it turned out quite well with little PP (RAW):

I love that K-5's new sensor, but also WR & SR of my Pentax gears!

Ok so if the information is correct about no more K-7 and K-x (maybe they've plenty of K-x stock for months)

I avoided the K-7 simply because the sensor is thumped by all the newer models sure it's nice and everything but for low light I passed. So as a K-x owner my next step up is a K-r (if I can find one that doesn't back focus ;-) But...ok it adds some decent bits but it's not really a compelling upgrade to the K-x bigger buffer nice, AF points lighting etc, nicer LCD (not that important)

It's not an essential upgrade for K-x users as you can get 90% of the K-r in the K-x for less and AA's straight out of the box (no need to buy the AA holder) So whilst I probably will add a K-r later on it's not jumping right out at me.

I think Pentax were a bit cautious with the K-r a bigger VF (penta prism) and two dials would have made it a stronger mid range model and I'd pay more for that. £1000 odd is just too much to outlay for a body that is more than I need. So yes I think there is still room for a mid range model.

@ temama
interesting... people open just a new account to add some rude comments

@Pentax_Prime

As I said in my previous comments, inmho the image quality of the 14 mp sensor is not better then my K10.
Your opinion is interesting - but factually incorrect. Time for you to move on IMO - you are clearly not interested in purchasing a camera.

Last month Pentax stopped producing the K7 and KX, so the 4 camera line up will be back to 2 cameras in no time.

Agree there is a space here (assuming the k-x does not get replaced hard to see how they can without entering K-r land)

I guess the K-r is in many ways mid level spec wise (even the K-x is to a point)

But one area it's not on body controls, 2 dials and a better viewfinder throw in some sealing plastic body could be quite an attractive model of course you could say it would hurt K-5 sales but not if they're careful.
I think you just defined the K-5. A less-capable sensor doesn't create much of a cost difference and you seem to want everything else. Fair enough - I wish I got my K-5 for USD $1,000. But I was willing to pay more and it seems the rest of the market is just as willing.

I see K-r and K-5 drifting down in price somewhat with perhaps the new mirrorless at the $500 point and/or FF based on Sony sensor in 2012. But Hoya would have to work out a deal with Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina for FF glass able to support the resolution of a high-MP sensor. I think they'll scale down before they scale up.

Ask me again in December. I'm almost certain to be right with whatever I think at that point .....

I think they could have simply "beefed up the K-r" a bit how about a 0.90x penta mirror bit bigger than the K-x couple more buttons, add some dual dials and a bit more on the video front. That would help a bit with that and allow a modest update of the K-x without hurting the K-r much

Of course they will drop down though I think Pentax are unlikely to repeat the success of the K-x with the K-r it might do pretty well but at the time the K-x seemed to offer an awful lot (in most respects) nailing bang per buck buyers quite easily.

Looking at the competition, the K5 pretty much falls in the "midrange" price bracket.

Looking at the spec sheets, the K7 pretty much fills the space if not supercedes in several areas.
Looking at image quality, the Kr hits the sweet spot.
Maybe there seems to be a lack of basic model rather than midrange?

For me, I would like the K-5 to be the mid range and the next version up have a swivel screen, better video and a few more bells and whistles.

The swiveling screen, like the new Canon T3i is a big deal, and would make studio life much easier .... and while we are at it ...... how about tethering !

wll

... but

Same old Pentax problem: Best body, very nice sensor but you buying into a system without any +400mm tele lenses. Pentax please fix it asap.
If you've got the money, the SMC Pentax-FA* 600mm f4 ED IF is apparently available for special-order from Japan.
