Pentax is missing a midrange model.

I would love a Pentax K-6, I think it would fit perfectly between the K-5 and KR.

Body should be the same as the K5, but specs could be reduced to the excellent 12MP sensor, 4-5 frames a second, not full HD movie and so on. Something similar to the Nikon D90 and Canon 50D-60D price wise around 700-900€. For people who just can't justify to spend the extra for the K-5 and wouldn't need the 18mpx anyway.

Any other takers, thoughts, etc.?

I think, if Pentax wants a decent marked share the need a new midrange model. (and some decent telelenses) Can't think of any reasons why it should not be possible, as they have the 12MP sensor and the body on hand. Well not that I have real hopes ... :-(

It might be that the K-5 will become the mid-level model. Rumors has it that Sony will be producing a 24 MP sensor that will be used in there upcoming Alpha 77 camera and also in the Nikon 400D camera. Could Pentax come up with a new body with a few more pro-level features that is above the K-5?

Well, my girlfriend owns the KX, which is no match for the built quality and ergonomics I am used with my K10. Two dials and every button just seems to be on the right spot. Thats what I love with Pentax. I had the K7 in my hands, which I liked very much, but I am not a big fan of the 14MP Samsung sensor, which I was able to test on a friends K20 for a while.

Agree there is a space here (assuming the k-x does not get replaced hard to see how they can without entering K-r land)

I guess the K-r is in many ways mid level spec wise (even the K-x is to a point)

But one area it's not on body controls, 2 dials and a better viewfinder throw in some sealing plastic body could be quite an attractive model of course you could say it would hurt K-5 sales but not if they're careful.

24MP!!!!

Then I would need to upgrade my computer first - no money left for a new camera body ;-) .
Seriously I just don´t need more than 12 (good) MP.

Ok fair point! I have 2 K10D's and agree with your Kx observations!

How about a Kr in a K7/K5 body? You get all the features of a Kr in a weather proof body with the ergonomics of a K5!

@johnny_rico - Yes count me in.

Come on Pentax, I would be happy to pay some 300 Euros extra over the KR, just for the K-5 Body. A KX/KR in a K5 Body would be perfect. (as long as there is some AF adjustment and a better AF as well).

I've been saying for years that Pentax needs a proper enthusiast model as the middle part of a three tier range, they don't seem to agree:

I'm critical because I care. I don't criticise things with no potential, so take it as a good sign.

Current cam: K10D, TZ1
Wish cams: LX5, EX-1, S90 or 4/3 pocket cam with fixed stabilized zoom lens.
Current lens: 18-55mm F3.5-5.6, 50mm F1.4, Sigma 105mm F2.8 macro

Wish lens: 16-90mm F3.5-5.6 or 17-90mm F3.2-4.5, a 70-300mm F3.2-4.5, usable quality with 1.4TC, 60mm F2 macro, 135mm F2.8 macro.

... but

Same old Pentax problem: Best body, very nice sensor but you buying into a system without any +400mm tele lenses. Pentax please fix it asap.

Sigma zooms are not a real option if you want to see some fine details. Except the Sigma 100-300 4,0 which I am currently using, but again everyone is getting HSM except us :(

Seems to me that the still available K-7 fills that role quite nicely at present.

I really thought of getting the K7, it is for a bargain avaiable, but imho there is a step back on IQ at base level to my trusty K10. The K10 has a very weak AA Filter which I prefer, the image is close to the foveon high IQ of my other (unperfect) SLR system.

@CSPronken

I just read your thread. Congrats, all said and well presented. Pentax just needs to read and Veni, vidi, vici ;-)

I currently have a K-x and am generally happy with it. Other than great value for the money, what I like best about it is its small size. It can fit comfortably in my man bag when I travel. I do not want a bigger camera like the K5. Even the K-r is closer to the K5 in size than it is to the K-x. Considering how much progress is being made in miniaturization, I would like to see a mid-range camera that is no bigger than the size of the K-x. Seems to me they could cram another dial in there with a good redesign. Give me the good autofocus, FPS, sensor (can leave off HD video) and I would buy it.

Hi,

First of all, what does the K-r not have to meet your mid-range requirements?
WR!!! and a grip. Proper focus in tungsten light would be nice too.

I'm thankful to still be able to...

You just described the K-7. It's readily available new for less than $900.

Pentax (at this moment) actually has a full range of 4 DSLR's that can be purchased new at most major internet retailers. The K-x ($500), the K-r ($620), the K-7 ($880), and the K-5 ($1,400). The K-7 shares the body, OVF, controls, and operation speed of the K-5 ... and is probably the 'best' deal in Pentax's current offerings considering the pro-build body. It lacks the high ISO prowess, DR, and video specs of the K-5; but it's a very capable camera.

....maybe this whining stops - at least here in Pentax forum ;-)

@Pentax_Prime

As I said in my previous comments, inmho the image quality of the 14 mp sensor is not better then my K10. Last month Pentax stopped producing the K7 and KX, so the 4 camera line up will be back to 2 cameras in no time.

Regards

I much prefer a reliable trouble free low end model just to mount my lenses. The bodies depreciate so fast it's not worth sinking any serious money in them. Besides, 2 different classes of products with identical appearance will never work because the majority will just buy the cheaper one.

Don't take it rude. I'm a long-term lurker here, and Pentax users as well. Maybe my comment was just a friendly piece of advice. Pentax has a lot of models, but if you don't like any of them so much, there is always a variety of brands available! It's not a sin to try out different brands.

...Maybe you can get even that > 400mm lens without unnecessary worries.
