Well if after recovering from Canon's extortionary price and weighing up the options you still want a 1DS you will be in for a nice long wait.

Word from Canon is that they are not expecting to be able to ship Cameras in any volume before the 2nd Quarter of 2003....

Judgeing from their track record with the D60 release I'd suggest that those currently on waiting lists for the 1DS will see their cameras sometime in the year 2346....

Their is a name for products annouced by companies but unavailable to someone who wants to buy one ....we call it Vaporware.

Paul,

You certainly sound disappointed and I don't blame you. For your work, this camera would be fantastic.

I'm glad I decided to go with a 1D recently and not wait for the 1Ds. While I'd love the resolution, I can enjoy the speed of the 1D now.

Who knows, maybe by the time they are really shipping, Nikon will have announced a real competitor to the 1Ds and push the "real" price down!

Regards,
Joe

as it actually exists! I write software, and we use that term for stuff that will be finished 'real soon now'. 'Real soon now' is another good term ;-}

Extortionary price? What is there to compare it to? NADA!! (In other words, someone could hire a photographer for less than what you cost ... but would the results be as good? Are they weather resistant with great AF?)

I wonder if the Kodak will be as heavily backordered ... with a similar huge, hard to manufacture chip?

No 1D, very few lenses, no camera bag or teleconverters thanks to some thief. Also, NO Canon 1200mm f/5.6.

Probably, I waited months for a Nikon 5000 after it was supposed to be available.

When I finally got it, I hated it & returned it three weeks later, but that's another story...

Paul,

This is nothing new.

Canon had said all along that INITIAL shipments would begin before the end of the year. We all know that volume shipments are some time later. Hell, we are only getting to volume shipments of the D60 about now.

I would expect you to have a camera in a matter of weeks. Everyone else will have to drool over your images for a few months before they can get theirs though.

SUre...tell people that they can't get one for a long time and watch people want it even more and at even higher prices.

No one expected them to say: "we are now shipping in volume by the end of December" did they?

Oh well maybe by the time they get arround to shipping them Nikon will have a new model out and the price will go down. Or maybe the Kodak will turn out good enough for some people and Canon will lower there price. There is a web site called the Canon Hall of Fame they have added a new entry about what goes into designing a new camera from the begining to final product. As I see it the first five step are allready done for them since they are useing the same body as the 1D the price should not be so high. You can buy four D60,s for the price of one 1Ds. I quess there lucky there is no natural disaster or they would call it price gouging.

Not sure why you need to resort to a personal attack.

Low volume shipments in the beginning - lot of hype about scarcity.

It's called marketing - especially for luxury goods.

I certainly expect that the gap between initial shipments and production would not be a half a year. That just tells me that the initial shipments were marketing hype to get the camera in the hands of some reviewers and big-name photographers.

In other industries, it is called a beta program.
Canon has said all along that INITIAL shipments will begin before
the end of the year. Higher-volume shipments always take longer.

Quite a cynic, aren't you?

so how would you suggest they launch a groundbreaking product with low initial production numbers?

I don't believe the limited shipping story...looks like they want to use the D60 wait story to create the hype to sell their over-priced 1ds.

canon has a lot of experience in manufacturing, d60 was another story no one had predicted such a demand for dslrs...just my $.02

I think that that is the wrong question. If it has such low initial production numbers, I got to assume that it is because of the yield they are getting on the CMOS sensor. If the yield is that low and it will take another 6 months (or so) to get production yields up to sufficient levels, why launch it now?

-They are launching because of marketing hype (remember the first press release that was leaked right before the 14n was announced?)

-They are launching because they want to prevent people from going to Nikon, blah, blah, blah... in some industries, that is referred to as "overhanging the market" and is illegal.

I am in line to buy this camera - pending reviews from Phil and early adopters - so I am not down on this camera. But announcing a camera 9 months before production quantities are ready I described as the oldest trick in the (marketing) book.

I know it is not a great comparison, but look at the D60. They announced at PMA and 3 months later I had one. If they would have priced it higher, I think that they would have matched supply to demand much quicker than they did.

Get real. Sometimes demand just exceeds demand. You can't blame the producer for that.

So what if demand exceeded supply. You don't have a God given right to buy a product now, simply because it's being made and you want one!

Actually, the press release said that they will begin shipping in November.

I have seen no other press releases or statements that said either end of year or that these are only INITIAL shipments and that it would take 7 more months to get to production.

I know there was a lot of speculation that this would be the case, but Canon never confirmed that.
