First off, I'm somewhat of an outsider here as my main digital kit is Sony w/Minolta lenses. But yesterday I picked up a Canon EOS 40D from the junk bin at a local store. The external condition is really good but there is no battery and the store didn't have one for me to test it out. I've had pretty good luck with stuff out of the junk bin at this store, with about 50% of it working well. I only paid 500 yen ($6) for this 40D so I figured I couldn't lose.

First off I'll be looking around for a battery and charger, or better yet, maybe a friend who has the same camera or one with a compatible battery. That is my first question... is there a chart with Canon battery compatibility info somewhere? I've been hunting around with no luck.

If this thing actually works I will be totally stoked! Everything I've read about it suggests its a pretty decent camera. The first lens that caught my eye was the very inexpensive 50/1.8 so unless there are better suggestions that is probably where I would start.

I only have the Canon 7D and i searched on the internet about the battery for Canon 40D and this is what ive found...

here is the correct battery for your 40D Canon BP-511A

If you have a friend who have one of the following cameras Canon PS Pro1/Canon G6/Canon EOS 5D/Canon 30D/Canon 40D perhaps you can borrowed them to test your Canon 40D.

I hope this will help you a little.

Goodluck...

A lot of the G series cameras have the same battery. Also many Canon camcorders.

BP511, BP511a, BP512 (and I believe even the BP514) will fit and work.

Yes! It was a strange feeling to come home with a Canon and a Nikon DSLR in my bag! I promptly posted at Dyxum announcing that I was jumping ship! :)
