Back from an Asia trip, 4 countries in 20days. Since I am Olympus user and recently there is a lot of negative talk about Olympus in this forum I pay extra attention on people's photo gear in the tourist area. And here is the break down of my un scientific collection of data.

Hong Kong - 40% of dslr is mirrorless and 90% of those are pany/oly system and I see more PEN than pany. 60% are Canikon, nothing else.

Taipei - 50% of dslr is mirrorless and 90% of those are PEN. Same deal, the rest are Canikon.
Guangzhou - 90% Canikon, 10% oly/pany mirrorless
Macau - 80% Canikon, 20% oly/pany mirrorless
Kuala Lumpur - N/A, I don't see many Dslr at all. Once a while there is a PEN.

Other interesting observation is that 1/2 the PEN I saw is in the hand of ladies and I am the only one w/ a Oly dslr.

I will say Oly is doing fine, with PEN they reach into female and young mkt which is important for their future. My wild guess for oly's game plan is that they're betting on when those young get older w/ more purchasing power they will upgrade to E system and HG lens.

P.S As you can see the closer it is to Japan the bigger the oly present, and we all know japan have heavy influence in trend. If they're doing fine over there NA and Euro is just a matter of time.

Enough of bs and get to more photo stuff, I am a photo newbie w/ a E410 and a few OMs and while I am visiting zoo I decide to use only my Tamron adaptall 2 80-210mm OM. All I want out of it is to have fun and some decent pic and I think I got both.
P.S i know my pic arn't any good but I am happy with them.

All pic are OOC and 210mm f8(too soft anything faster) with E410 and monopod in M mode

The first 2 I am on the shuttle and I only have split sec to take the pic

Thanks for looking.

Interesting observations.

Terrific piccies. You have got the MF beautifully.

Love the expression on the elephant, and the shot of the mandrill (?).
AND the shot of the bird, and the monkeys ... :)

Well done.

Thank you for your market survey and photos. During the last two years I haven been visiting Shanghai, Zhejiang and Anhui both for work and pleasure and have also made some observations on what gear people are carrying. I agree with you that it seems that Nikon and Canon (in that order) hold 90% of the Chinese camera market. DSLR´s are very popular and the bigger and more expensive - the better. So of small format cameras those with 35mm sensor seem to be unproportionately popular. Pentax, Sony and Olympus all are almost nonexistent, not to mention such marginal players like Samsung and Sigma.

I think the current market situation in China is a bit strange - there are far too many people using expensive DSLR´s. Most of them would very well do with a good compact. But having a big Nikon or Canon hanging on shoulder has some sort of status appeal at this moment.

During my last visit in October I had both E-3 and E-P2 which I used roughly 50/50. I did not see anybody else with a Pen but spotted some (not many) Panasonic mirrorless.
Best regards, Pekka.

Its always interesting to get some indication of what is going on, so thanks for the data.
However I don't see any mention of non 'dslrs'.

There is no doubt that in some places, many are buying EVIL type cameras. But how many of those are choosing them over a conventional DSLR, and how many of them are choosing them instead of a conventional compact/P&S ? Kind of makes a difference.

You nail it right there, mainland china have the mentality of bigger(aka expensive) the better thats why you see everyone with a 5D mk II w/ L lens. Eventhough why they need or want to carry a 5D is beyond me. Like someone said in other thread, Oly should have drop the price of E3 the sub 1k lvl to get a pcs of that mkt.
$399 EPL1, $599 EPL2, $699 EP2, $499 E620, $899 E3 and $1499 E5
Those looks good to me.

Speaking of getting attention, my lowly E410 w/ a big old lens get a lot of people to turn their hand and wonder what it is.

I see more dslr than P&S(isn't it funny?), I have not idea what the ratio is but I see a few ladies with a PEN + big lens on tripod shoot night sense. Something I never see in NA.

Hi Stan,

Those are all good shots, particularly using MF and given the weight of the 80-210. I have the 103A version and it is much under-rated over here in the UK going typically for around £15 to £20. You do a good job with it.

regards,

Mike

Thanks, I have the 03A version(I looked all over but don't see a 1) I just wish it is sharper @ f5.6 and F3.8/4 so I don't have to step down to F8. With E410 I only have iso100-400 to work with, that and f8 make it very different to get a good pic.

I just got a Nikkor AI mount 80-200mm f4.5 from my dad and I will do some testing after I got the adapter. hopefully it is sharper @ f5.6 and f4.5.

I picked up the 103A as I still use an OM4Ti and the 103A was a re-design of the 03A that improved the edge sharpness and CA correction at the cost of reducing the centre resolution at 210mm, so, on the E410, you probably have the sharper lens of the two. There was a website which listed the Tamron Adaptall A2 and SP lenses, but not sure if it is still around. Given the constraints of the lens/body combo that makes your images all the more impressive.

regards,

Mike
