when i go to spanner2 the display brightness screen setting icon/button is fourth item down from top, correct?

i then press the right arrow pad and arrive at a screen that shows 2 options/buttons "Auto" on top and "-3" (my current screen brightness selection) on the bottom.

i press "right" arrow pad again and i get a picture(from CF card) and the option to set the brightness level.

i have tried pressing info and OK at the same time and also info then ok from this final screen as well as the screen before with the same results.

either of the button press combinations simply result in sending me back to the previous screen(s) spanner2 (menu) screen or first screen of the display brightness screen.

When you get to LCD brightness adjustment, make sure the highlighted item is the screen adjusters (the one on the right side)
i do not see anything or way to highlight. i simply see a verticle scale +- overlaid onto the right hand side of an image. pressing up or down simply adjust brightness. how does one 'highlight' the screen adjusters? what are the screen adjusters?

i am following steps from OP, i just want to explain my confusion...
aside from the additional steps described in OP thread, i....
press menu button (again after power up)
scroll down to spanner 2
scroll down to fourth button (screen icon with scale marks below it)
press right in to first screen that displays current settings

press right (again) into screen that allows user to actually adjust current settings
which of the two final screens does one press the info and then OK button?
i've tried both of the screens
Then press info followed by OK

I've tried this 3 times, it works everytime

Here is the sequence I used:
  1. Camera OFF
  2. Hold down MENU button and turn ON the camera
  3. Wait for LCD display to come on, then release MENU button
  4. Press MENU button again to get to Menus
  5. Select the Spanner menu options (at bottom) and press RIGHT
  6. Select the LCD Brightness Menu (third item down) and press RIGHT
  7. Press RIGHT again to get to screen with adjusters shown on right side
  8. Press INFO button
  9. Press OK button (shows initial screen*)
  10. Press in sequence UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT/SHUTTER/UP and Page 1 info appears
Now:

Press UP for Page 1 info
Press RIGHT for Page 2 info
Press DOWN for Page 3 info
Press LEFT for Page 4 info

* First screen shown on mine was:
"OLYMPUS E-5 05 01 01 00"

Edit:
Oh, and thank you for posting this! :)

Works fine for me.

In a little over a month, I've 1695 releases on the camera. A lot of those were "getting to know you" and not actual photography, though.

OP: how did you figure this out?

Since you're not supposed to be messing around with the service menu, you shouldn't know if there's a diagnostic flag in the page 4 menu or not. Probably it's gone after a hard reset. Have you tried that already?

If the camera doesn't work properly, only the service department knows how to decode those diagnostic messages.

If the camera works, don't worry; Be happy and use it properly.

Great then, I got this from a friend. Think someone from the inside leak this, otherwise, no one will ever found this out just by punching randomly :)

I was able to do a Hard Reset and the message "2C40" is still in Page 4.

I just went into my E5 and I have the same 'D'amage 2C40 Code.

Hopefully that is something other than Damage. :> )
I believe my first screen is 02 01 01 01
What is your first screen??? Maybe it has something to do with that.

Also, I checked my E30.

The first screen is the same as on my E5, so maybe it may have something do to with Firmware on lenses or even software used…….
D was Blank on the E30

i had a look at the screen shot of your E5's display screen with "2 adjusters" overlaid onto an image.
you have "2 adjusters", one for WB and one for brightness...that's interesting.

when viewing my screen i have only one adjuster showing...the brightness adjuster.

you state your LCD screen button is third item down from the top but mine is fourth down from the top.

i have two spanners showing they are listed as spanner icon "1" and spanner icon "2".
my monitor adjustment button is in spanner number 2 fourth from top.

i have enadled the menu function(it's icon depicts two gears of different colors) of my camera.
i must have some setting turned off, or on, that has influenced the procedure.

i do recall (not sure if it's with E3 though) seeing the same screen depicted at your website showing an image overlayed with two adjusters.

maybe i'm looking in the wrong menu at the wrong LCD monitor adjustment button or i have my E5 confiugred in a way that prohibits the shutter count function (or i am dumdarse).
i do not have the camera or manual with me so I'll check tonight.
thanks for the help.

I have two adjuster - make sure you're on the brightness one. If only one is showing, could it be you're in a mode where you cannot manually set wb?

actually in mine as well, that's a "copy" error ;-)

as long as you start the camera off as described above and reach the screen where you set the brightness - you should be fine. I had to repeat the UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT/SHUTTER/UP quite a few times myself to get it right. Just keep trying.

Took a couple of tries on my E-5 to get the menus to display. Don't know why. I consider it as more academic interest than anything else ... I don't normally concern myself much with the number of times a camera has made an exposure.

Anyway, I've been underestimating how many exposures I've made since I bought the E-5 on October 20. I don't think it's in any danger of being worn out yet, however. ]'-)
