If you look at
http://maindns.us/~http-url/strangemark.jpg

you will see a faint circular almost 'emblem' or 'logo' type disc which shows itself on usually dark flat areas of colour, which occurs randomly in the position, size and intensity. The size in the samples are simply lifted and pasted from a full size file (no resize).

I have now shot around 1200 photos on my S45 and have noticed it on some photos, perhaps about 10. It could either be the camera or the Canon transfer software, or some other strange happening.

Just wondering if anyone else noticed these strange (unwanted) markings?

Looks like lens dust to me ?

Most likely these are photo with flash and the circles are reflection from air particles.

I have CANON S40 and I met the same problem several times (usually when I was shooting with a flash in a low-lighted room). I just thought it's a kind of mystique and I forgot about it (for me this problem appeared only in one room). Nice to meet a colleague with the same problem! :-)

I don't have the samples on the Internet, but I can provide some if necessary, looks exactly the same!

Yes, it really looks like 'reflection from air particles' but I have never ever met such problem before...

I had an old Kodak DC210. Took it to a preschool gymnastic performance where they were using talc. There was a bunch floating in the air and it got into EVERY crack of that camera and showed similar marks...only 100X worse. I had to send the camera in for repair. Were you around any area with a lot of floating particles?

Can't find anything similar to your problem with my S45, I believe it's the reflection when taking flash photos.

I can't say for sure.. and I haven't done any research, but from first glance it looks like the AF assist lamp or something like that.

I don't even know if the s45 has one, or there might be some other glaring reason my theory sucks, but that's what it looks like after taking a look for 5 secs or so.

My coolpix 2500 does the same thing on EVERY SINGLE FLASH photo. I am calling tomorrow to get warranty repair work done. I think dust somehow got inside the lens.

if the spots are on the same place in every photo this is dust but this is not very common.

if the spots are in different places and only occur with flash photos, then this is dust floating around in the air that is being illuminated by the flash. there is no fix. cameras with fixed-focus lenses with small apertures (and thus large depth of field) are more susceptible to this issue.

i first saw this in late 1997 with my olympus d-320l camera.

What is strange though, there were two other Kodak digital cameras on the scene taking photos at the same time and only the S45 seemed to suffer :-(

Never seemed to appear in my 35mm shots, so I guess digital cameras are more susceptible in some way.

oh well... at least I know to avoid talc like the plague :-)

I've experienced the same with the S30. Photos taken with flash in a dark room sometimes show these bright circles. I can take a few photos at a time and the effect only shows up on a small number.

At first I thought it might be the AF lamp not switching off quick enough, but I think I have a few shots where there's more than one of these circles present in the frame. I'll see if I can find a good example to post if I haven't deleted them - seems to be a 'random' occurance rather than something on the lens.
