I've had my 602 for a week now and over all I'm really happy.

I have made a few observations:
  • USB cabel not standard. Damn! The usb port on my mp3 player (Mpio) and my "old" Olympus 2040 is a standard USB cable, which means that I can use the same cable. The 602 uses different kind of plug in the camera end. Same size and looks just about the same, but not standard. Stupid. Yes, I'm all out of USB ports.
  • Autofocus in dark situations. Not as bad as I had feared from the reviews and the comments here. A lot better than the Olympus 2040.
  • Quality settings and ISO: There's more noise in the high ISO setting pictures that I had though (again as pr reviews), I'll try and upload examples RSN. Also when you change to ISO800 and ISO1600, the resoultion changes to 1mp (as it should), but when you change back to a lower ISO rating the resolution doesn't change back.
  • Speed. It's damn fast! To fast. I often use the sequence feature (max five shots in a row) and often it takes more pictures when I intend to (also see my complaint about sound). This means that in a good light situation, there whon't be much difference between the five pictures. Also, it takes more time to store five pictures, time in which I can't take another picture.
  • Sound: With the sound turned of the camera is nearly silent, making it hard to hear that you've actually taken a picture and the two second preview doesn't work in sequence mode. It's not bad that the camera is silent, but I would like some clearer indication that I've actually take a picture.
That's it for now.

Hi there, look at the light at the rear of the cam on the right hand side, while it is writing to the memory the light blinks orange and green. No blinkin' light = No blinkin' picture. Taffy.

Don't you go blinkin' blink at me.... ;-)

I've a tendency to concentrate on the subject or the screen. But good idea, I'll try to be better at noticing the LED.

Under the setup menu, there's an option to set the sound (LOW/HIGH/OFF), the factory default is at LOW, if you haven't do so, maybe you can try setting it to HIGH and see if that works better for you.

Oops, I think I misunderstood your problem...ignore my response.

With a few (!) more shots take, I've noticed that I generally have my thumb over the "the memory is working" indicator, when shooting. I know - I supposed to have it between the two zoom buttons, but, well, my hand doesn't seem to want to do that.

I've had my 602 for just over a week now and I agree with your observations.

However, my Nikon 775 in Macro mode and Best Shot Selector took better low lighting shots.

I also find it quite slow to save top 5 to the card. I take photos of Horse Show Jumping events and if I take shots using top 5 for the 1st jump, the camera is not ready for the 2nd jump. If I do not use the top 5, I release the shutter either too late or too early for the perfect pose.

My 602 is quite noisy in terms of sound. If I have the sound switched off, I can here my lens zoom and when I half press, I can hear the focus mechanism trying to focus. This is very noticeable in low light when the camera is hunting for the focus. WHen I finally full press the shutter, I can definitely hear a click like the film cameras.

Is this not the case for everybody else?

I to changed from an olympus C2040 up to the S602.

I think some people judge the 602 a little harshly. It kicks the butt of my old olympus in terms of focus abilty and ease of use.

I'd agree that the little electric shutter noise is often missed when using it in noisey situations, but you will get used to it and you'll know it's taken a shot by instinct.

My only gripes about the 602 would be the flash......why didn't they give the cam TTL ability if they were going to use such a tiny on board flash?
and
it should have been at least 5mp to start with.

Since the camera is 6mp and the pictures rival the ones from average 4mp or cheap 5mp cameras (the latter are usually much too noisy to be worthwile/ too litte sensor cells/still cost more than the 602Z) what is your problem? You should be aware that the SuperCCD is working on a remarkable techique which is yielding higher horizontal/vertical resolution without loosing the relative low noise levels a 3mp sensor can produce.

Karl

I know exactly how the ccd operates, and i've compared prints from 5mp cams to the 6mp settings on my 602. imho the 5mp cam has the edge.

i'd put the 6mp setting on par with 4 to 4.5mp in the true sense.

wouldn't it have been nice to have had 5mp to start with though before the image gets the super ccd treatment?

the thought of a 10mp output sounds better than a 6mp output ;-)

I love my S602, but it's not wrong to want more.
I only said they were gripes anyway, not faults :-)
