I added a "Favorites" section to my gallery. It contains a bunch of my favorites from all of the other sections. I re-processed them to the best of my ability.

I've only used "benign" post-processing (filters, spotting, rotation, perspective correction, levels, curves, color adjustments) unless otherwise indicated.

Most have been shot with the Minolta D7i, some with the Canon S40, and some with a couple of SLR's on slide film and scanned.

The direct link to the gallery is http://www.seittipaja.fi/Favorites/

Comments most appreciated.

Hi Petteri,

A very nice set of pics in your new favorites section.

Rowan berries was lovely. The red, gold and black make a great combination of colors.

Wind in the rushes - very good, but maybe needed a little more dof?

Liked autumn light 1. I would curious how it would have looked with a little more sharpening (at least on the web redition).

Lights in the night (At midnight also). Loved the stillness, great colors!

In the corner. Great composition, colors Great pic.

Loved Gate of Moria. (Not my gate of Moria, but that's more of a personal thing anyway.) Excellent pic though!

Moon and wind. Just liked the colors and textures Could be a painting.

Thought yalla, yalla was very good. Nice compostion and pallette of colors. Kind of pastural.

Excellent pictures,
Richard.

Hi Petteri,

A very nice set of pics in your new favorites section.
Thanks for the encouragement!

Actually, I kind of like the way the limited DOF creates an impression of depth. (Also, the rushes were blowing around pretty wildly, and I wanted to freeze them, so I had to use 1/1000 or faster shutter. This obviously put a limit on my minimum aperture.)
Liked autumn light 1. I would curious how it would have looked with

That is a very tricky one. I spent a long time trying to find the optimum level of sharpening. Too much, and it loses the "soft" quality of the light, which IMO is a very important part of it. I originally had a good deal more sharpened version of it on-line, but I took it down: I like this one more.

Thanks. Those are S40 shots. It was my first low-light shoot with it, I had no decent tripod and had the camera set to "Hard" sharpening -- which means that the originals weren't tack-sharp but they were oversharpened. Still, I like them.
In the corner. Great composition, colors Great pic.
Isn't it though? That one's by my wife. :-)
Loved Gate of Moria. (Not my gate of Moria, but that's more of a

Not mine exactly, either, but it did make me think of it...
Moon and wind. Just liked the colors and textures Could be a painting.
That was an interesting one to shoot. I had my tripod left in the car, and was too lazy to go get it. So I shot this propped against the side of the window. I tried several shots, but found that I could only hold it steady for ISO400. Therefore the grain -- but I kind of like the resulting texture.
Thought yalla, yalla was very good. Nice compostion and pallette of

Can't get much more pastoral than a flock of sheep...
Excellent pictures,
Thanks again for the encouragement, and especially for taking the time to comment. You have some very good nice pictures in your galleries too: I especially like your eye for textures and water. Your post-processing is also top-notch. The sky seems often blown-out, though: is that a dynamic range limitation on your camera?

I agree, the sky is blown on a number of my pics. I don't think the S404 is renown for great dynamic range, but I think a bigger factor is likely where I have comprised in post processing.

Some of the originals do have more sky detail, but I have sometimes increased contrast and lightened for the benefit of the main subject at the expense of the sky, especially in backlit situations.

Thanks for the feedback and good luck with your photography!

Have you tried using Levels or Curves instead of contrast? That way you can get better contrast where you need it, and keep the highlights.
Thanks for the feedback and good luck with your photography!

Petteri,
Perkele! :o))

Very good photos, indeed. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Petteri Sulonen, I ckd your index - magnificent galleries! I happy for you that you've had the opportunity to travel far and wide to obscure fascinating regions I'd loved to have seen. My comments : Excellent framing, good exposures, great pictures to begin with but some post-processing indicated - like using a contrast mask in PS to reach into shadows for significant details, whilst preserving highlight detail. Also for some photos the elimination of blue cast. I'm kinit-picking, because all in all better than any I could ever do.

You've travelled far and wide to obscure regions I'd loved to have gone, but in my 73 year it's too late now.

Loved yr gulls picture.

Contrast masking? Hmmm... now there's an idea. The one thing that still really bothers me about my post-processing technique is exactly that, and that USM doesn't sharpen important low-key detail. Could you be more specific about this technique? -- Thanks for the thanks, too.

If you're in poor health, maybe -- but if not, why would it be too late? Leni Riefenstahl is over 100, and is still going strong!

Nepal is at war now, so maybe not a good idea to go there (and a 2-week trek at 3000-4000 meters might be pushing it) but many "obscure regions" are actually quite easily accessible, at least if you're willing to spend some money.
