Help with D7000 deal - 55-300 or 70-300 - Worried over weight

I'm buying the D7000 with kit lens but have 2 options for an additional lens for the package.

55-300 or 70-300

I have no lenses at this time so I figured I'd roll with the 18-105 kit lens and get one of the above. With the pkg deal, subtracting out the $1500 for the basic kit, the 55-300vr would be $300. The 70-300vr would be $390 with another 10% off because it's the 'demo' model sitting in a case which puts it at $350.

Hence the 70-300vr would be $50 more than the 55-300vr. I'm having a hard time finding comparisons of these 2 and so far the only thing I'm gleaning is the 55-300vr is slower to focus. But how bad is it? I realize people seem to like this 70-300 lens but holy cow - it's huge and heavy.

Money 100% aside, is this 70-300 really that much better than the 55-300 at the cost of weight/bulk? The 70 weighs 26.3, the 55 is 18.7. That is a massive difference in weight. BUT, if shooting birds and my dog at the dog park, am I going to end up in a foul mood because the 55 hunts for focus? That would suck

I'm just questioning the trade off here. I do want as fast an autofocus as possible but it would be so nice to have less weight. So how bad IS the focus speed on the 55-300vr? Or is this all a big no-brainer?

I'm hoping to buy in the next couple hours :)

Hi,

I think for the little extra, I'd pick the 70-300. I really like mine and, since you'll have 18-105 you won't miss the 55mm end. The 70-300 is really a great lens IMHO.

I was about to get the 70-300 when the 55-300 was announced. I waited for months for test results and for being able to try it out. To me the slower focus was obvious. It also doesn't have manual focus override on auto. Yes it is more compact and lighter. It all depends on what you want to do with it. If you are spending that kind of money on the camera might as well not make a compromise you might regret on the glass. That's a really good price on the 70-300, but if weight is an issue the best solution is not to get any of these lenses. That will save you weight, bulk and money ;-)

Happy Shooting!

D5000 - Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm F/3.5-5.6G ED VR - Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.4 G - Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm VR - Canon PowerShot S3

I have both and the IQ is pretty close between them, as mentioned the focus is much slower on the 55-300mm. But I think the VR is better on the 55-300mm. Its a tough decision.

But If you can deal with the extra weight, the 70-300mm is a better lens in my opinion.

:) So you've actually handled the 55-300vr and it's slow eh?

Shall I assume it's quite a bit slower and not just a sliver? A big gap speed difference between the 2?

I have a very short fuse when it comes to gadgets and waiting for the 55-300 to focus, or if it hunts a bit - I'd semi-lose it. It's just unfortunate re the heft of the 70-300. Wish they'd make a dx version.

55-300vr cannot compare with 70-300vr ...
go for the 70-300vr
I tried both.

enough said :)

Done! I got the 70-300 vr. Got an even better deal on it ($299) and 10% off the cam w/kit lens :o And they threw in a lens cleaning kit LOL

Now it's learn learn learn..... Thank you guys so much for your help. I actually didn't find the lens too heavy at all in comparison to the 55-300.
