Comments please - Photo comparison..which do you like

Probably because of a couple of self proclaimed goodie two shoes who want to shape the forum into their likeness....of course, their likeness is "do as I say, not as I do."
Kim was right in his assessment of the images, as it was feedback about how you saw the processing, not the camera or the composition that was important to me. It will help when I take said Fuji center to task over its woeful processing.
If Kim was right and you are thanking him for his input it is really a shame he was banned for his efforts.
Say What!! Did I miss something, I thought I had read all the posts in this thread
I dont see why he should have had that happen???

So thank you all for the input, I have more than enough info to slap them with.

wow, a whopping 7 days this time. he was given 30 days a month ago by his own admission and posting on his blog. he even stated to some degree that the ban notice told him they had never received so many complaints on him. yet he was allowed to come back after the 30 day ban, and within one month he gets banned again, this time for only 7 days. if it is indeed true that this is his 10th ban, then that is disgusting to say the least.

no wonder people leave here.

Hi Ralph,

Compositionally, I far prefer the second one. But I digress...

From an image quality POV, there are several things that need addressing:

Image 1:
  • virtually zero shadow detail; look at the posterization in the black shirt, visible even at the smallest preview size, and you can even see dithering on the skin tones of your son's arm - this is really, really bad, as if the image was saved to a 256-color pallette like a GIF
  • you said this was converted from a TIF - how did it come out of the camera and what compression settings did you use? LZW is lossless, but even so I have never seen anything like this straight from a compact camera so it must be in whatever processing was done after the fact
  • the greens are very saturated, but a) this looks okay to me as the skin tones and Majik's fur still look normal, b) I have seen extremely saturated foliage like this on overcast days, and c) there is no obvious hue shift to the scrubby stuff in the background so again it's probably not a big deal unless you personally find it unpleasant. Maybe the WB could be a little warmer but that's normal for cloudy days
Image 2:
  • Vastly better tonality (again look at the black shirt and the range of values in the shorts)
  • Nice use of shallow DOF (while it's usually advised not to have OOF elements in the foreground, that's a rule i.e. meant to be broken ;) and in this case it's unavoidable and IMO adds greatly to the image)
  • Excessive noise reduction - fur, hair and skin detail completely gone
  • Remarkably high (I would say extreme) JPG compression: "mosquito" artifacts around edges, even the edges of the image frame (!), actually adding false detail to the OOF background in places where it should be completely blurred away
I have no idea what happened to the HS10 image, but for the Pentax you'd better check the camera settings, specifically NR and JPG size/quality if you don't wish to shoot RAW. Remember you can always reduce the size and quality later but you can't put it back if it wasn't saved in the first place. Is there any way you can post the originals so we can get a better idea of what's going on without "looking through" the size reduction? (sorry if I missed this elsewhere in the thread) If you need to reduce image size for web posting there are some really good freeware programs that do a pretty neat job (the software that came with the Pentax ought to be able to do it). I know you can always set the camera to a reduced size (which should result in sharper, less noisy images at all ISOs) but even if you're just out snapping around the yard with no specific intentions you might happen to catch a real keeper that you'd like to print to a decent size, but if the camera's set to some really small resolution, you're SOL (if you'll pardon the expression).

Sorry if these comments sound harsh but you have some good gear (especially in the Pentax) and it'd be a shame not to get the best out of it you can. As things stand at the moment, the Pentax image is definitely better, but the HS10 is being severely hobbled somewhere betwen capture and posting so it's not even close to a fair fight. Having said that, if the DSLR is set up correctly it should slay the HS10, particularly on dim days like the one shown (and if you shoot RAW you can futz with the WB later to make it look cheerful!)

Hope this helps,
Scott

I think people critiqued the images thinking they were digital shots. Scans of film are created by a completely different process, are you sure that the same rules apply? I don't know the answer, just wondering!

Okay, now I feel like a dope for not reading the thread...

I still have no idea WRT the HS10 images unless we can see the original files from the camera.

As for the Pentax scans, be aware that some labs do immensely superior scans to others. Any decent quality color or B&W film can be scanned to produce very sharp results, so long as the machine is working correctly (I have seen one in a well-known "pro" store that is not) and the operator know's what they're doing. Even

I can personally recommend North Coast Photographic Services w w w.ncps.com. They have 2 levels of scans, the higher of which comes out at 16MP (3339 x 5035) and look amazing . It will cost more to get your negs scanned after you've had them developed (as in this case) but you might want to give them a shot with these pics and see what's really on the film!

Because their scans are an odd size I would recommend croppping slightly (3328 x 4992) before resizing.

My pbase page has some galleries that were shot on film and scanned: http://www.pbase.com/smcleod965 . Ngauruhoe and Whakaari were shot on "disposable" cameras with pretty mediocre ISO800 film as I had drowned my A95 a couple of days before, so they are by far the worst of the bunch (and were not scanned by NCPS who could no doubt have done a better job)

HTH,
Scott

Kim was fine. He critiqued your photos, not you personally. The Attack Pack just ganged up on him, as usual, and DPR tossed him.

Another fine job done by the mods.

Here is my bet. When someone gives you a critique that your images "Suck" and are "Really awful", I hope you are able to respond in the same classy manner that Ralph did. My bet is that you won't, and you will blow a gasket. That is my bet. I will bookmark this post to remind myself the next time you blow that gasket.

Kim got what he deserved. He again violated posted rules that are in effect for each and every member that joins this website. If you, or others can not abide by those rules, then expect that people will not tolerate it. Very simple.
Another fine job done by the mods.

You did a good thread Ralph, you got the answers you were looking for.
Unfortunately, the thread has been commandeered by the forum police. Time to go.

See you around, Happy New Year.

You seem to have taken over from where SO left off. You two seem so similar in your thinking I'm beginning to think she has a twin. Perish the thought!

You clearly have a fair understanding of English grammar so why do you deliberately choose to not capitalise the beginning of every sentence? Putting that aside - your spelling, punctuation and style has a similarity to someone who has recently flown the nest.

We all know SO had a disslike toward Kim, Bill, Buckshot and Ratty - she made that perfectly clear - and you seem to be taking over where she left off. You also seem hell bent on attacking Henry at every opportunity also.
no wonder people leave here.
People leave for many reasons.

One thing that is for certain. The way you attack certain members in here - you definitely seem like a person who has been scorned.

There is strangeness here in the FTF. There is a person or persons that have more than one personality. Sometimes opposite personalities so they can up the stakes and really get things going. It is actually quite disturbing when you start thinking about it. These personalities can attack people appearing to be many when it is only one. These personalities gather troops to help by appearing to become friends with real people. Then the personality comes in attacks and the “friends” follow suit … after all they are friends right? Most of us rarely push the baby button but the personality loves the baby button and encourages its use through private chat and e-mail. The longer I watch the more I see … the personality even taunts and admits its deception like in this post.

10 bans? Are you kidding me? It is no wonder why people are leaving here.
If people have left because of Kim receiving 10 bans, that would indicate people left because he wasn't here. Just goes to prove what an asset to the FTF he is.

Thanks for bringing it to the forums attension. Your followers won't be too pleased with you though.

I'm sure we're not alone in thinking the samething JB :D
I makes sense, pretty funny too. SHE does what she ACCUSES others of doing!
You are one of the characters I wonder about. You appeared out of nowhere knew everyone and became the yang to one of the personalities yings

If you are a real person be aware how it appears
