I'm not sure if I would call it odd, but a little disappointing. The wait continues...

One important item that did change is that there is now a TWAIN plug-in for photoshop (or other TWAIN compliant program) for some Epson scanners such as the 2450. That's great news, as we got one at work a few days ago. Till now, we could use it with ImageCapture with USB, Vuescan with firewire, but LaserSoft SilverFast didn't work yet with either cable.

So, I am looking forward to trying this new option tomorrow.

I'm waiting for a driver for an Epson 1290 and OS X. The printer will work but some of the features like borderless printing aren't supported.

I had a call from someone at Epson here in Sydney to tell me that they were expecting to have the new drivers by the end of the year or the beginning of next (or maybe before)! Isn't that a speedy solution – how long has OS X been out?

I feel your pain, for sure. I have no clue why big companies like Epson and Canon and HP and others find it so darned difficult to stay current with new operating systems, particularly OS X. it's actually somewhat ridiculous, IMHO. We wait and wait and wait.....and wait some more...

So lets say that I buy an epson 2200 tomorrow and try to use it with my powerbook in OS X 10.2. With current drivers etc, will this be a useable printer? What functions will not work? Is it useless as a printer? If any of the above are true, when will absolutely up to date drivers that allow one to make use of all printer functions be available?

No it won't be useless. You will just not be able to do borderless printing and roll paper printing. However, you still can do these things in classic. If you have at least 512mgs of ram or better, classic works pretty well. I will occassionally get a crash or two, but most of the time I can print with no problem. For some reason people are loathe to use classic but I generally don't mind using it.

Carl Schofield,

I just got done downloading the latest Gimp-Print. I checked on the supported printer list and the 2200 is listed as experimental.

http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3

This prerelease rev has added a very substantial number of print resolution and paper options over the previous release, many more than the standard Epson driver. I'm using it for my Epson 3000, but I'm going so see how well the 1280 driver works.

Requires Ghostsript which can be downloaded on the same page.

Please excuse the density, but could you tell me a bit about gimp-print. I've been through the site and am not clear if it will make the 2200 do everything that it should. For example, borderless printing. Would really like to know if these issues are/will be resolved prior to ordering this expensive, albeit high quality printer.

evan cohn,

Better to ask on the Gimp-Print forums. I don't have a 2200 so I can't offer anything on this printer and Gimp-Print, but someone reading the forums is probably writing the drivers.
