Now the cam is shipping and a lot of the other review sites have all ready tested the cam. Why is Dpreview always the slowest kid on the block ?

If you want to have relevance speed is a competetive parameter. I am not suggesting speed in favour of quality but it must be possible to find a better comprimise than this I hope.

Otherwise you are giving away your advantage to eoshd.com phillipbloom and the other cool emerging sites.

As the tests of dpreview are taking presumably more efforts than many of the so called "reviews" and "tests" in the net, it takes more time.

I prefer thorough, possibly longer lasting tests, instead of this often little backed, enthusiastic advertisements, called "reviews".

I tend to agree, but its also just becoming a standard phrase. There is plenty reiviewers out there doing a very thorough job in much less time than this site.

I dont think its an excuse

Kind regards

Lets see - the highest resolution 43 and m43 camera ever - the files look pretty good.

As I figure it, people are either getting one or they are not, some of them are waiting for a review to confirm why - either way that is. real issue probably is if people like evil small sensor cameras.. or if they don't. personally I did not really expect a 16megapix sensor in 43.

... because we would all like to see a comprehensive dpreview style review yesterday. However, there may well be factors that we are unaware of, such as:
  • exactly when did dpreview receive a camera for review with version 1.0 firmware? (Judging from the preview dates the in depth reviews of other cameras such as new models from Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Pentax take up to 4 months to go from preview to in depth review; so January 2011 seems likely for the GH2.)
  • are dpreview limited by the terms of an NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) with Panasonic? (Some 'reviewers' are prepared to deliberately flout NDA terms, but dpreview has a need to build a long-term relationship with the camera manufacturers and flouting an NDA is not the way to go about this.)
  • do dpreview have the optimal staff to complete a quality review? (They have recently been advertising for new staff, so this may be a factor. Given that the GH2 may well set new benchmarks for a combination stills/video camera, it is important that they get the review right rather than rushed, IMO.)
  • many of the dpreview staff are Europeans who have migrated to Seattle in recent months. They may have family priorities in Europe at Christmas time. (I know when I worked in the US from 1989-1992 that I missed my family terribly at that time of year.)
All the above points are mere speculations as I have no inside knowledge or connection with dpreview other than as a satisfied customer.

So far, I haven't found any review of the GH2, which is as detailed as the dpreview format. Many reviews are based on preproduction units as the GH2 is only readily available since beginning of December, whereas the competition (EOS 60D, D7000, K5) was notably quicker on the market. Add to this the relevance of the aforementioned products and you get the reason why the review of the GH2 has not been published yet.

Call it the same phrase or not, you won't change the policy of dpreview. dpreview's reputation is so well, that being "late" with a particular review won't have any significant influence on the popularity of the site.

Really? I haven't seen any reviews nearly as complete as dpreview yet. Some of what was out there is on preproduction cameras. You have the DCRP review that just came out but while good, it is no where as complete or as complex

DPREVIEW staff have also stated that they have other cameras in queue ahead of the GH2 which only makes sense as many new cameras came out this year and the fans of those cameras want their reviews also. Doing thorough reviews is their business but they don't play favorites. They will get to it as soon as they can, because that is their business.

And please keep in mind it is a major holiday season. I won't begrudge them time with their families, especially since for some those families may be half a world away. The review will be done, and when done it will be complete. I also suspect from other "early" reviews, it will likely be positive.

Hell, wish I could work for them myself. Would be a great job as well as "busy". Wonder if they need a "jack of all trades" to help with daily grunt work.

If the reviewers have headed to Europe for Christmas, I can tell you that their returns will be delayed by the bad weather. It took us 3 days to get out of London and now we are stuck in Germany because of the east coast storm.

Anyway, I echo the sentiment of being happy to wait for a quality review. No one does it better than the DPReview staff.

So another week went by... I guess we can hope that the review will come in 2011, I guess the site is not more ambitious than that.

Perhaps even on purpose! I'm sure your insults won't help as well!
Insults ?? I am merely pointing out that this site is going back to its old reputation of being the slowest turtle on the block.

My bet is that they're waiting for Panasonic to release an upcoming firmware release to fix some problem they may have found (hot pixels? banding in video?)...

Hey

That would seem odd, its a commercially available cam, sold in the shops, If Panasonic didnt finish the product before selling it, then a few remarks in a review would be deserved.

Kind regards
