I have a 35, 50, and 85 primes so now I'd like to buy a 24 to complete my collection of primes. I use a DX body so sometimes 35 isn't quite wide enough for me, and I'd like a true 35mm focal length so that's where the 24mm comes in. The problem is I don't know which one to get.

Which 24mm prime (any brand is fine) has the best IQ? Obviously the overpriced Nikon 24 1.4 is probably the best out there but which other 24 prime is the best one out there for the price?

Nikon has an assortment of 20mm-28mm AI-S lenses that come in several flavors of max aperture. You should check them out.

I was eying up the 24/2 and 28mm f/2 for awhile but decided against it. ("35 is wide enough for shots that I require bokeh with. Might as well look at UWA if I wanted more coverage.")

20mm 3.5
20mm 2.8
24mm 2.8
24mm 2.0
28mm 3.5
28mm 2.8
28mm 2.0

I discounted the 3.5 and 2.8's because there are already zoom lenses available in those with those apertures (even though these are smaller, built better).

So if you can live with manual focus... take your pick. What you pay determines aperture, but they are all more affordable than the 24/1.4G

Check out the Sigma 24mm f2.8 Superwide II. Great little lens, and relatively cheap used - I think I paid ~$110 about 4 years ago - but you don't see them that often.

Pros:
Super sharp
Close focusing (macro-ish)
Built like a tank
Will also work on FX (if that's a possibility for you)

Cons:
Slow focusing, from one extreme to the other
Can't use lens cap and hood at same time - both go on the same way, like the cap

There's plenty of users and user reviews on this site.

Why must it be a prime? The only prime which beats the 14-24 at 24 is the new "overpriced" 1.4. If you can afford it get the 14-24.

+1
It's an amazing lens.

Anyways, the 24 2.8 is a fine lens for the price and very small. Size is what this lens does best.

Not sure what your budget is but Nikon makes a few lenses that are better at 24mm

I use a 24mm f:2.8 on my D-700 with great results. I also use a number of my old AI's including 50 1.2, 50 1.4 55 3.5 micro. I also love my 1st version 80-200 D which is sharper than my 70-200 2.8 V1afs. Not sure if they are great lenses or that the D-700 is so good that it makes them look good.

Am I crazy to write to a thread from 2011???

Ok, so I got one of these 24mm Sigma Super Wides -- and it really is perfect -- except -- I got an autofocus (using it on a Nex-6 with an optically corrected adapter) -- but here is the rub (pardon the pun).... OK, remember that Seinfeld episode where George's pants zipped when he walked? Well my lens zips any time I manually focus -- which is every time! Zip. Zip. Zip. Is this just the way that it is -- or am I missing something?

Some stay OP is still putting money aside to buy the overpriced 24 1.4 :D

Specifically Nikon new the "long in the tooth" 24mm f2.8 D is soft in the corners wide open on FX, but most of the softness is cropped out on DX. It is small, compact, lightweight and relatively cheap though the lens hood is usually an extra. If overall weight of your equipment might be an issue it is worth serious consideration.

You have not said which DX body you use. The "basic" body options do not support AF with this lens.

The 24mm f1.8 G is another option. It has improved optics, a faster maximum aperture and the price includes a lens hood and soft pouch.

The relative new 24mm 1.8 is pretty awesome, I love its colors and reduced CA. The bokeh is not the best (28mm is better) but its not that bad. And dont forgett its very lightweight! I love this lens!

S0 is the noise while manually focusing the older Autofocus Sigma Super Wide II 24mm 2.8 lens normal? I use it with a optical reducer on a Nex-6 and like it.
