Speedliter's Handbook: Learning to Craft Light with Canon Speedlites By Syl Arena

I just got the book and have been thumbing through it. This is a real 21st century photo technique book. It goes over everything you could think about. It is so well illustrated, better than almost any other book I have seen lately in this area and I look at tons of photo books. This is such a different type of book than the many digital guides out there. Takes the Joe McNally Hot Shoe Diaries to another level (and Canon).

I have no affiliation, I just got the book today and think it's amazing.

Many thanks for the kind tip. I just ordered the book for myself as flash photography is my clearly weak side technically.

Anyone who knows about a good book for macro flash photography? I guess this is not covered in the book?

I have had this on pre-order from amazon since november and the site astill says the book is not yet available...but i am in the Uk and as a rule of thumb we are roughly 3-5 years behind the US for good quality books/movie releases.

I'm glad it's a decent book as i am extremely phobic of using artificial lighting!

Try the bookdepository - it says normally available 48 hours but on the other hand published Uk 28 Jan 2011

Yes, it was only available for pre order on amazon.co.uk

Another book I really want to recommend is "light, science and magic", which is the best book about photography I have ever read. Actually the only book that drastically improves your photography visibly from teh first chapter!

Thanks for the tip on this book, mine has just arrived from the Bookdepository in UK in a few days. The scope of the book is far wider than just using Speedlites, assumes little prior knowledge, but does not patronise. Having just had a 430ex ii for xmas, this aging amateur found Syl's book absolutely splendid in depth and breadth. Just the job!

I ordered mine from Peachpit and bought the Book and eBook bundle. The eBook is available for immediate download, have had a good read while waiting for the book to arrive.

Which Podcast was Syl on?
That is a Peachpit Press book so I am pretty suer that I heard Syl on the "Peachpit TV" podcast called "Depth of Field" conducted by Matt Brandon "the Digital Trekker". I may have also heard him on the Nik Radio Podcast (Nik SW) as well.

I tend to delete the Pod Casts after I listen so I cannot go back easily and search. I would dial up iTunes and look at the listings for some of the popular ones and see where you can find nim. Most of these guys appear on several of them at different times.

I found this on iTunes but you might look here:

I'm very much a paper book person and looking forward to the hardcopy. The eBook while instantly gratifying just can't replace paper. Two inspiring books I have are Joe McNally's The Moment It Clicks and The Hot Shoe Diaries .. I got them autographed by Joe when I met him in Malaysia last year.

I agree: great book. Profusely illustrated, plain English, lavish explanations that don't desert you in the middle. Both of McNally's books mentioned are also excellent. If I can absorb even a little from these 3 my photography will improve enormously.
