Hi guy's and girls,

Following this forum a while and are very impressed by the retouch you do to pictures. As I'm just a amateur using books to get me through PS CS3, I would like to ask you if you could help me with the following picture.....

1: I would like to blur the back ground (not able to find a lens blur which is equal)

2: get the little boys on the right back more clearly (he seems a bit unclear/unfocused to me) and

3: remove the hand.

Would love it when you also could tell me how you did it:)

Is is a jped picture as I'm not sure how to uplead a raw picture.

GIMP.

Lost of layers and layer masks with small changes.
Some cloning, blending and masking to remove the flash effects and flare.
Some masking and blurring to get the background blurred.

Cloning, blending, masking and such like to remove the hand and create a vaguely acceptable replacement - don't look too closely.

USM applied selectively with a mask layer used to control how much the affect is applied to different areas.

Here is my try. I duped background layer, selected background then blurred and darkened. Selected top layer, denoised lightly, selectively sharpened subjects, did some cloning on a separate layer to eliminate highlights on girl's face and brightened foreground using a curves adjustment layer.

Hello,

Really liked what you did with this picture. Could i ask for the PS file so I could have a detailed look in my CS3 at the changes you did?

Would appriciate it very much-

Henk

Hello,

Would appreciate it very much.

Used the clone tool to remove the hand, flash flare and any blemishes and then extracted the subjects with the couch to a new layer using the pen tool. Now, using a copy of the BG, curves or gradients to darken as well as blur will not effect the subject layer.

Hello Babine,

I was away on holiday for some days and I did not see your work for today. Perfectly done!

Thanks,
Henk

Hello Babine,

I was away on holiday for some days and I do not know if that is the reason, but how can I see your retouch work on my picture??
There's a general problem on this forums website which means that some people are not seeing pictures or special text formatting inside posts (and the message preview may not be working also). These may be unintended consequences from an update of some kind. Generally these kinds of things are fixed very quickly, but the dpreview staff may be distracted by attendance at a certain big electronics tradeshow.

I can't be sure, but it may only be a problem with Internet Explorer. At least that's the case on my own computer: IE version 8 is currently not showing the site properly, but Opera 11 and Firefox 3 are fine.

regards, RP

None of the embedded photos are showing in IE8, even when I add .JPG to the address. And yet, here in Firefox, all is well.
IE 8 is suddenly working again for me. Nicely done, secret dpreview elves! Clearly someone is minding the store, not glitzing it up at CES ;-) RP
