Beginner dslr Book

Exposure & Lighting, Understanding Exposure and Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Photography: An Instant Start-up Manual for New DSLR Owners seem to be the recommended.

Having checked a little out from your links it's beginning to look like I would benefit from the Quick Snap Guide and one of the Exposure books, so looks like two will have to be purchased.

gwlaw's links for on-line information are good: cambridge and digital photography school.

the K10 is like the K20
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxk20d/page3.asp

the link above is what the K20 looks like. the operation will be quite different from your camera. menus will be different, the screen on the back behaves differently, too. i wouldn't look into a K10-specific book...
My only hesitation gwlaw is that I've no idea how compatible the K10 is with my K-x?

I just finished Understanding Exposure, (Christmas Present) Wish I had read it two and a half years ago when I first got my D90, Very informative, and easy to understand.

Yes, book is very easy to understand for the first time and first timer. Just try to understand each case, circumstances and the references Bryan gives for each picture he took. You will enjoy. Good Luck!

That's great. Absolutely no-one has slagged off Understanding Exposure so I have to assume it's worth the money in gold. That and the Quick Guide I mentioned in the first book should keep me going....along with the 300 page K-x manual ;(

Photography is a very broad subject. I recommend the book Photography 10th ed but you can find 9th ed used on amazon. It is very comprehensive, straight forward and well illustrated.

Understanding Exposure by Peterson is excellent but it is not for an absolute beginner. Photography 9th or 10th ed is much better suited to a total beginner.

Thanks for that, I'll have a look to see what kind of deals I can get on UK Amazon. Appreciate the reply.

By the way has anyone read Digital SLR Cameras and Photography For Dummies... by David D. Busch - any good?

I've read one of Busch's books on the Nikon d50. It was good but not a keeper. I have heard good things about the dslr Dummies book but I don't know if it was the specific one you are referring to. check out the reviews on Amazon.

I bought a dslr camara 2 years ago and I read the entire manual, then I went to Barnes and Noble and bough a dvd all about my camera. I was so happy because I finally learned how to set my white balance but I still did not know how to set the shutter and apperture. In October I signed up for a photography class through my community. The class cost me $49.00 and it opened up a whole new world to me. It took 3 classes to learn about the shutter and aperture and I am now looking forward to the next class to learn about lighting. The teacher went to each person in the class and examined their camera. She told us that the first class was like taking a puzzle out of the box and just looking at the pieces, the second class would be like putting the corners of the puzzle together and by the 3rd class we would know how to take picture -- She made it very simple and fun. I hope you can find a beginnner class in your community. We went on a field trip to a nature preserve and it was a cloudy dismal day, but I finally felt like a photographer.

Thanks for all the advice. As with all reviews it was a bit mixed.

Re taking classes, yes that's something I definately wanna/need to do. However I think I'll wait until summer time as they are often advertised in the local camera shop's window then. Or perhaps I'll get in touch with my local college. Until then books and loads sweat and tears as well as tearing my hair out is the way forward :)

When I click on the web page it says it's a free trial for 10 days but you seem to have to fill out contact information. It may be different where you're based - I'm UK. Hope this helps.

don't know much about the Safari page. i found it looking for the books discussed here. for the book they do have, their preview is leaps and bounds ahead of the page or two of a book you may see at Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

being able to preview a good bit of each chapter is why i linked it. in the US, i can see a lot of the book without registering for a trial. i had presumed it would work the same for Stephanie.

you do have to pay to see all. or use the trial period. the trial period allows only an unspecified number of pages to be viewed.

Hi guys. I can view the Safari website and locate the book I wish to examine. But the pages only open in preview mode and I see just a little bit of it. Oh well, I've yet to decide on a second book to purchase, but the first one should be arriving soon :)
