FZ50-FZ40-FZ100 Christmas Tree shootout...

P Mode Camera off...Hold down Jitter/Anti Shake Button on top between Shutter button and Burst Mode button while simultaneously holding down top button of 4-way control then Power On Camera...then once power is up release buttons...then turn Control Dial to Review Mode (Arrow)...then simultaneously press bottom 4-way control button and Jitter/Anti Shake Button then if that doesn't work go to the next photo with right or left control button and try again...

one of mine gave ne problems so I formatted the SD Card in camera...then I took one photo with the camera as it does say to have a photo on the card...then it didn't work so I used the right control button to select the photo and it came up (the Version Window)...
Thx again, LTZ.

However, I'm having trouble checking mine with those instructions. It say's connect AC adapter and insert battery ? It also say's AE mode, which I assume is the A or automatic mode on the dial, right ? I suppose I'll need to go to my manual to brush up on their abbreviations, to understand these instructions.

It was much simpler to check the firmware version on the FZ100.

I tried it exactly your way, LTZ, and still NOTA ! Perhaps because my SD card is full, I will try again with another card.

Anyway, thanks again for your efforts. Much appreciated ! :)

So, other than the IQ being a tad better with the FZ40, which of the two cameras do you prefer, and which has the best color rendition of the two ? TIA !

is it just me or is the FZ100 picture really horrible? I think the FZ50 picture is really great. I love the warm colors, but I don't know which one is closer to reality? Why are the lights in the tree that much sharper on the FZ50?

LT:

The matter is how good is the FZ100? Everybody is talking about the FZ50 and your appreciation of the virtues of the forgotten FZ100, now that I am waiting for it, are absent.
Kind regards

PS: the FZ100 photo is not horrible. The settings, and/or light are different and in this case give vantage to the FZ40. But you can do much better with it.

I used this to determine mine was 1.07 Roger...
I succeded in finding out the firmware version of my FZ50, and it's 1.05. Have either one of you ever heard of that firmware #, and if so, how much and what difference would the 1.07 or 1.09 make ? It seem's as though I am way out of the loop, lol. Mine must have been a pre-production model. ;)

Are the two flowers on the same tree having different colors in reality? i..e One having a darkish red cool color(FZ40) and one having a light red color(FZ100)? If those flowers in reality look the same to the human eye, then FZ40 image equals to FZ100. But if the flowers are not like in picture, then can we say FZ100 is poor in rendering the colors?

On the FZ100 I can see more whiteness whereas FZ40 is more dark shade. Was the WB setting the same on both cameras?

Which ones are satisfactory for your discerning eyes? Would you be happy with these shots if you took them...I am very satisfied and I think that's what everyone has to honestly ask themselves...I could care less what folks think about these shots they are very pleasing to me...could they be better...yes...but that's why I love photography the perfect shots we are always in search of never comes...or the perfect camera...so please your sefl the FZ40 and the FZ100 are very capable cameras...
For me:
Birding - FZ40 with TCE17ED and ZS7 on my hip or FZ100 with LC55...

Macro's either FZ100 or FZ40 they are both excellent better than my Canon S95 as they focus excellent for Macros even the Zoom Shots are great!, haven't tried FZ50 yet...soon!
For Travel FZ100 and ZS7
For Sports and Landscapes and Architecture FZ100 hands down
For Indoors FZ50 and S95 preferably FZ50
Indoor Dinner's S95
Out and about town shopping and knocking around ZS7 or S95...
FZ100:

FZ40:

Just a note on the Close Up Shots the FZ40 shots were with the LC55 and the FZ100 was the camera alone....All shots were off Monopod braced in any position required to get the shot...sometimes I even layit sideways and handhold it...it still helps me steady these old hands and makes a great walking stick with the FZ35-40-100 on the top of it...

The flower that was shot with the FZ40 had just opened up and was still shiny and in full sunlight...the FZ100 flower was in the shade and the FZ40 is actually tweaking the colors to a darker more vivid output...the FZ100 is much more accurate...later after more shots, I toned the FZ40 some by shifting AWB to Yellow more cutting some of the Red tone out and Bluish Tint...much better...
Both were in AWB...

Last one IMHO is the best of the bunch.

Next best would be the first shot with the FZ40, and after that the last shot with the FZ100.

Roger in the before and after shots you couldn't tell much difference at all...maybe a little better NR on one camera, but overall they basically remained the same...I tried the FZ35 Firmware Update from Europe and it didn't do anything either that I could tell...

If the FZ100 had the LC55 fitted these would have been excellent as it was I didn't have the LA5 Adapter yet as it was still on the way from Japan...thanks Jim as your discernment is highly valued...

Correct Urban the FZ40 also had the LC55 attached and the FZ100 was without...and the shading of the face of the flower didn't allow the FZ100 to detail it well...

It’s all gotten rather fickle with sensors and cameras, much of the film used by some very famous photographers wouldn’t perform like some small camera sensors in various conditions – in much of the discussion about photography the gear has overtaken the art.

A good exercise would be, here are Cartier Bresson’s best 20 shots and over here is Hitchcock’s 20 best frames; would your camera take these with some post processing – it would be a close call.

Put another way, Leonardo’s and Michelangelo’s brushes and paints were probably no where as advanced as what is on offer now – this in no way renders their work less valuable.

We are looking at snapshots not fine art. Do you want true to life colours for the family album or an impressionist painting of what the scene looked like through the eyes of some guy with a box of paints.
