Hello guys,

please should somebody experienced here help me with choosing between 3020 and 4000? These cameras seems to be identical so my question is simple... when I dont need 4MP resolution are there some new or enhanced things on 4000? Or its only +1MP?

And also how perform these cams in sport and nigth shooting?

Thanks!
David

The C-4000 also has the 5 pin TTL flash port, if you wanted to go down the path of external flash (though at $100 or more for a basic setup, it might be too pricy for you).
And also how perform these cams in sport and nigth shooting?
I would have to imagine that night shooting of action scenes without flash will be hard or impossible.

Hi Richard,

thanks for your opinion! I've looked for 3040 cuz it have sound also, but looks like no shop here have this camera :(

Ad 4040 I've found one shop where it is available but its for $300 more than 3020 is.. so I'm not sure if its worth of it.. opinions?

David
David,
If I were making the choice at that level of camera, I'd look at
the C-xx40 series cameras. They have the faster 1.8 lens which
would be very helpful in your sports and nightime shots. Either
the 3040 or 4040 would be excellent for this. I've got a C-3000,
which is a great camera, but sometimes wish I had that 1.8 lens.

Hi Michael,
thanks for your opinions!

Additional flash dont have much value for me.. I'm not profi and have limited budget so I want use this camera "as is" without additional lenses etc.

Ad night shots.. I saw in many reviews that 3020 and 4000 have very good low light capability... so I'm wondering if it will be ok to take nigt shots and shots on party...

Thank you,
David

Keith,

"Low light" depends on just how low. Both those cameras have 2.8 lenses which is ok, but you do need auxiliary lighting for darker shots. The onboard flash has limited range, but you can take decent pictures within the limitations of the camera. I've gotten fairly good pictures with the onboard flash on my 3000, which has the same lens as the 3020/4000, but again, your range and exposure control is limited.

I've been using my C3020Z for about 2 months now, including a week shooting high-speed bicycles at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge. A fair bit of my shooting was at dusk, and would have benefited from an external flash.

I think a bigger obstacle to using the 3020 for sports action shots is the shutter lag. If the action is moving (changing location) locking the AF doesn't help much. I missed a couple of nice shots because of the lag.

Other than that, I think the 3020 is a fine camera, I've gotten good results with it under less extreme/demanding circumstances.

My $0.02 worth

I have the C-4000 it's newer than the C-4040. Even if the you only get the f2.8 instead of the f1.8 it's an awsome camera. The C-4000 has a super macro mode. You get lots of bang for your buck.

I don't think the fast lens is that big of a difference.

The C-4000 is the upgrade to the C-3020 and they are typically the same price. Go for the C-4000 online you can get it for around $375 from a good ealer.

David,

That is endemic to most digital cameras; some better; some worse. I don't think you'll find that a bigger problem with any of the cameras you are considering than others. Shooting against back backlighting is tough.

BTW how about this violet cast on borders of dark subjects on
bright backrounds like at http://www.pbase.com/image/1463006/large
? I saw that its problem with many Oly cameras.... some way to
solve this?

Thanks!

someone else? nobody here know the differences between 3020 and 4000?

David,

I was just doing the same homework you are doing yourself. I have narrowed my choices to these two cameras. In fact my credit card is out now . . . just have to decide . . .

Actually, I am leaning towards the 4000. I am not sure what all the differences are, but you can do a "side by side" if you go to the "Buying Guide" section in upper left corner of this page.

I really consider this comparison to be somewhat of a draw: Professional reviews tend to favor the 4000, while user reviews the 3020. However, the differences appear minor.

Oh, and one other thing. Surprisingly, the 4000 is a bit cheaper . . . go figure. Now, DigtalFoto Discount Club has a package deal on the 4000; batteries/charger, 64mb card, tripod, case, $477. Hmm, or Buydig.com, 4000 w/128mb card $464 . . . .decisions, decisions.

I'm sure this didn't help much. . .

Thanks! I'll try this "buying guide". I'm not sure if is the best idea to purchase this from web shops because mail-man does not care much about what they delivering and if there will be some problems with camera, it will require additional money to return it...so I think will be better to buy locally.

On the other side my decision is almost sure now, because I haven't found a local shop where is 3020 available... looks like its discontinued...:(

I've found one difference...3020 have b/w lcd display on top, but 4000 not :(

David, CliffL,

You can get the C-4000 online from a good store like buydig for under $400 including shipping. That would more than make up for the cost of tax and even return shipping if there's a problem. Usually not a good idea to buy a package deal. The parts of the package are generally not the highest quality. A 128 MB SM card can be had for about $50 including shipping from newegg.com.
