Been leaning to 18-135mm lens but not sure if the 17-85mm is better?
The 17-85 has better silent/fast ring-USM AF, and a little better build quality. It is a bit wider angle, but not as long a zoom. 17-85 is marginally better optically, but as a practical matter I doubt people could distinguish the same pic shot with each. So your choice - longer zoom range or the nicer build and AF. IMHO.

From another thread:

These are elements that must be weighed and balanced against your needs when buying any lens:

1.Cost
2.Range
3.Speed
4.Optical quality
5.Build quality
6.AF Speed
7.Size and weight
8. (for video) smoothness of manual focus

(not necessarily in that order)

It's different for everyone.

I had a 17-85mm and found that it suffered from CA and a lot of distortion at the wide end. The range, IS and USM were all nice but overall I'd recommend a uality 17-50mm f2.8 rather than this lens.
