Mac users please respond. How many of us? Any Mac computer will do. I have
2 (G3/300 and 7600/120).

G4 - 450mhz 128mb ram 20 gig hard drive. 6 months old. It's great, I'll
never go back to WINDOWS!
The VIP room!

G4 400/AGP, 640MB RAM, -2-18GB drives. Also 6 months old, and it's AWESOME! I've never used anything but Apple, but I can only guess what PC must be like, based on the reaction of people I've seen who have switched over to the MacOS from Windows.

Stop feeding the troll kids. This has no relevance to digital photography and will turn into another endless Mac vs. PC mindless argument. If you're gifted between the ears you'll get the job done no matter what tool you use.

Bluebox G3 350/17' apple studio monitor - has been flawless for 1 1/2 years - can't imagine working on graphical jobs without it - so as far as
I,m concerned why deal with the aggro associated with those other PC "tools"

Dear ,

I, and I presume everyone else that has participated thus far in this thread, have done so NOT with the intention of creating a battle between the platforms, but as the original post stated, to come forward as Mac users and state what gear we're using. In what is undoubtedly a PC-dominated world, it can be quite helpful to have some semblance of a network between those people who work on the MacOS. Further, I would state that the SUBJECT area of this thread was fairly easy to understand, so I would have to question the purpose of your post within the thread. Are you a Mac user? Yes? Then the people here would simply like to know that, and some info about your gear. Also, a NAME would be helpful! If you're not a Mac user, then I have NO IDEA why you would enter this thread...wouldn't it be pointless for any of us to enter a discussion about WINDOWS???

I never used anything else than Macs:
my PowerBook G3/400 is the fourth in
a row... and I'm still very happy with it.

I do think the computer you use has
a lot to do with digital photography:
the software depends on your operat-
ing system. Aren't we talking about
digital photography?

Are you suggesting a Mac-Forum here?

All,

My Work is administering PC LAN; currently NT 4.0 SP6..., on Dell workstations and servers.

Pleasure is being at home with a G4, 192Mb, however, less than 10Gb left of HD. It's about 6 months old, connected to an Epson Photo 700 and an OLD Sigma Designs' crappy (and small) 15" monitor. Will upgrade to Viewsonic soon. Use a SM card reader attached via USB. Do most of the work in photoshop 5.0, but I know that I need PS 5.5 to exhaust the velocity engine! Been bringing Macs home since 1994.

Camera... - just lost it, literally (well, I accidentally left it behind and it was gone before I got back to it).

; - (

Now, I am currently leaning toward the Canon D30 but curious about the Fuji if priced more appropriately, more strategically!

Exactly the same thing happened to me! I lost my MX1700 and now have a 4700 on order. Have used Macs since 2 weeks after the first one came out. Currently use a Performa 6400 with G3 upgrade and USB for the card reader. Also have a PB3400 to go. Both are a pleasure to use. My Sony 505 lightweight is OK, but not in the same class for convenience and ease of use, especially if you have a lot of different types of programs as I do.

I only wish we have a mac forum here. BTW My whole setup:
G3/300, 256 RAM, Total 42 Gb UW drives, 2 Monitors (19 and 17 Hitachi's), Jaz
1Gb, Zip, CDR, DAT, 2 Nikon scanners (35 mm slide and flatbed), Mackie mixer,
Alesis amplifier and speakers, rgb video card (ATI), video capture card (Aurora
Fuse), ultra wide SCSI card ( Adaptec 2940UW), epson 900 printer, DSL Linksys

router with firewall, some other stuff. Mostly at home I work in After Effects, Final
Cut and Photoshop.

Bill get a Hitachi. http://www.hitachidisplays.com/products/index.htm I have 2
(19" 769 and 17" 643). They are the sharpest (22 and 14 dp). Your eyes will
appeciate. I was looking at Sony's G series. They look great, almost perfecr
flatness, but do not come close to Hitachi tubes. At work I have Sony F500R (21"
most expensive one) but my Hitachis look the same, exept they are NOT flat.

Bill, you might want to check out the LaCie Electron monitors. The electron22blue is currently available for around $1,300 (KILLER monitor), but the electron19blue is just as good, and it's the real steal...absolutely incredible monitor, and you can find it at MacMall and other retailers for about $670.! Check one out if you can.

Own a Sony Cybershot F55

Planning to buy 3 MegaPixel - just cant make up my mind. I need a USB Digital Camera.

Love my Cybershot, but am starting to hate Sony these days - so, I'm leaning toward the Nikon 990, but don't like the size.

Okay Leon - I'll bite. Why is the Mac best in the graphics business?

Under W98, 2nd Edition, the PC allows the user to select default printer and monitor profiles for use by non-Photoshop programs. I'm not sure what else I could ask of the computer (PC) as related to graphics processing - seems like all the better programs run on the PC as well as the Mac. Of course, there is a small problem every time I do a "Windows Update" - for every %$&!@#$ problem fixed by Microsoft, two brand new #% &@$# problems are created. Gates is wealthy and does not have to put up with the @%$# that I endure (Bill has a Mac and could care less I'm sure).

Your comment about the Mac comes at an important time for me. I have thought about a Mac purchase for a couple of months. I'm sold on SCSI as a high performance interface (presently using the 2940UW interface card); I just hate the high prices. Finally made up my mind today (circa 10:00 am) and ordered a new PC. However, it is not too late to cancel the order. Therefore, I'm all ears - lay it on me. Why is the Mac best in the graphics business?

Thanks in advance for your sage advice! BTW - my print four inches from the florescent light is still hanging in there - I cannot measure a shift with my scanner.

Okay Leon - I'll bite. Why is the Mac best in the graphics business?
1) The Mac is still more user friendly, which means more time spent doing, producing and creating and less time consulting manuals and

calling tech support.....Most graphics oriented users prefer that their creative work flow is not bogged down by technical hassles. The apps may

be the same but their implementation and presentation within the MAC OS makes a lot of difference for many.

2) Quality - yes the MAC is a pricier machine on the face of it , but they are reliable, high quality machines and that is important to people who

use a computer to earn their crust and rely on getting the job done right first time. Reliability is also meant in the sense that what you see is what

you get ,which is obviously more critical for graphical work......Color synching etc.

3) If you need to reproduce artwork, then sooner or later you'll need to use a service bureau....and generally speaking that means MAC sourced
files are still preferred.

4) Wintel PC's are great work horses for many applications.....but they still don't cut the mustard in the graphics business.

regards

Ch
