I just picked this camera up to go with some of my other cameras and have to say i am blown away with the quality. The lense and sensor is amazing. The images out of this camera have a very different look compared to other cameras i own. They look very film like. I assume its the difference in the sensor. They almost have a 3d appearance to them, a depth that I have seen so little in my other images. Honestly i cant believe how well this camera compares to some of my other cameras costing so much more. What do others think about the IQ compared to other cameras and i dont mean compacts. I have shot or own alot of cameras and this one is on a different level compared to 4/3 or point and shoots.
thanks,
todd

Welcome to the club! ;)

Have you printed anything yet? If not, you may have another Christmas present waiting for you, those 4.6MP are surprisingly good on paper.

Hi Todd,

Yes, the lenses on the DP1 and DP2 are outstanding, and the sensor often elicits descriptions like '3D' and 'filmlike'. Welcome to the club!

thanks guys. i have not printed yet. just pixel peeped and cant figure out how these images look so deep. I shoot alot of full frame stuff with zeiss lenses and have to say the dp2 has a similar look. I would not have thought that the sensor makes that much difference in the images. Hard to describe.

Thanks Todd for sharing your experiences and feeling about your Sigma/Foveon camera. Welcome to the club and please post some images when you have time.

Hello,

The comments "welcome to the club" are aimed at our group of FOV SIMGA fans who have also seen similiar results that you see.

I own the DP1s and enjoy the camera like you enjoy you DP2.

Are you new to Photography or just new to the Simga DP2 series?

Do you find that you are able to get good close up images with the DP2?

All my best,
ImageGuy

I have been shooting for probably 25 years. I have a few other cameras. Mostly full frame, d700, a900 and a crop frame the sony NEX. Yeah the close ups are nice on the dp2. I plan to use it next week so I will be able to put it through its paces. The images are really impressive.

It's interesting to hear this reaction from a new Sigma user. Some reactions have been quite different, like the people who come on the forum and complain about the poor ergonomics. Some people don't seem to be able to see or appreciate the quality from Sigma cameras, and this includes many reviewers. Many people don't do any pixel peeping at all, so they never see the incredible sharpness and clarity of the images (with no artifacts!). As long as the imperfections disappear when the photo is shrunk for printing, they are pleased with the images from any camera.

Tell me, Todd, how do you feel about the ergonomics? Do you feel that the slowness, poor LCD, etc., are worth it to get the good image quality? I haven't bought a Sigma camera yet, though I have looked at hundreds of full-size images posted on the internet. I've been saving up to get the SD1, but I'm thinking about getting the DP1x before that.

Cmurdock, no the ergonomics don't other me. I actually think the camera looks great. The LCD is nice too. Yeah its not the latest greatest, but it works well. Focus works great, but if you get into a place with very low light, it has trouble locking focus, but I have not been in a situation where this has occured, only when I tested to see how low it will focus. The sharpness and clarity of the images really do blow your mind. Makes you think twice about your bayer sensor based cameras. No matter how you post process images from bayer based cameras, I can't seem to get them to have the snap or look of the sigma.

It's a funny thing. I looked at the images from the Pentax 645D -- that new camera with the huge sensor that everyone is talking about -- and the images look just as dull and soft as all the other Bayer images do. I just don't understand why the reviewers aren't able to appreciate the crispness and clarity of Sigma images. As long as an image looks good when it is reduced and printed, that's all they seem to care about.

Woops, it looks like I said that in my previous post.

+1 to both of you above. :)

This is kind of tangential, but I receive a Class 10 Sandisk SD card for the holidays and tried it out in the DP2s. I was able to shoot 19 RAW photos per minute, which amounted to a write speed of 13.2 MB/second. See here: http://infrared.tk

Welcome to the club from another Sigma newbie. I really like my DP2s.
