I live in Iceland and I just bought a sony 717.
I saw in the operating manual that the operatin temperature is 0°-40°C

I want to use the camera in the winter here on travels but the temp. goes well below 0°C here.

Has anyone used the camera in temp. under 0°C ????

Did it work ok or not?????

But, logic would suggest that your biggest problem would be your batteries... I would suggest keeping them as warm as possible until use..I do not think that The batteries will last long in that temp.

Also, letting your camera adjust to the cold before use, and then place the battery in... I think there was one thread where someone places their camera in a zip lock bag when taking it back indoors, and leaving it sealed until it warmes to room temporature... I believe this is to reduce moister build up on , or in the camera lenses, etc... Maybe someone else can elaborate on preventave measures when shooting in those temps..

0°C as extreme cold...ha ha ha...that got me rolling on the floor. 0°C extreme cold. Ha hah. I kid you not when I say there will likely be a time this winter when it may WARM up to -40C and locally we will feel like it is a warm spell and welcome it with relief. I doubt if batteries will be the limiting factor. You can always take a battery out of your pocket. The frozen EVF is more likely but it will take a short while for me to confirm that. :)

Hi, Oskar

I did use my previous 707 at approximately -5 with no problem. But of course I didn't use it too long, about 1 hr or so. I supposed by new 717 should not have any problem too :). However, as mentioned by the other guys, take care of the condensation when you move to a warmer place.

I have a photographic memory, but I always seem to have the lens cap on.

Oskar, I used my 707 once in about 10 below, for probably 1/2 hour, seemed to work fine, but the batt life dropped to about 20min. I think all I would worry about are the moving parts & poss. of fogging your lens--- I'd talk to an s.l.r. camera tech. about it. They prob. would have the most insight on those conditions
