Hi,

Is there a power supply for the 550D? I read somewhere that there was one, but I can't find it anywhere. It'd be useful for timelapse, especially.

Thanks.

It is. Thanks.

There don't seem to be any Canon original ones around, although Canon mention it on their website by the code name, I can't find it anywhere on Canon's site or any reputable online source, such as Amazon. All I can find is cheap Hongkong jobbies that considering they're delivering power from the mains to my delicate camera, I'm a little weary of the cheapo ones...

Any idea if Canon actually manufacture these? If so, any idea where I might buy one?

Thanks again.
Mike.

Thanks.

That looks genuine to me... It's curious why there's little evidence of it on Canon's website though...

Thanks again.

Because the Canon USA website is maintained by monkeys hitting keys randomly. ;) :D

Under the Supplies & Accessories for the T2i they list a power adapter, but it's the wrong model, the CA-PS700 kit is for a couple PowerShot cameras. It won't work with any EOS cameras. http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_rebel_t2i_ef_s_18_55mm_is_kit#SuppliesAndAccessories :x

If you really must buy from Canon USA, the proper ACK-E8 kit isn't even at the Canon Direct Store, but they do have a part of the kit, the DR-E8 dummy battery that the power converter plugs into. http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_245009_-1

I am also going to buy an ac adapter for my T2i. I found these two on ebay, but I can't figure out what is the difference?

The first one is $20 and the second one is ~$30. The second one includes "DR-E8 Coupler", which I am not sure whether it is necessary to have to power the T2i from ac power or not?

If anyone can verify the first model, I am interested in buying that.

On the other hand, I am not interested in saving $10 and probably damage the camera, if the first one is not trusted.

Thanks for the comments!

I bought a China made AC power adapter from bestbatt.com for my T2i similar to the unit in your first link. The original unit I received gave intermittent problems, especially a high temperature warning when first turning on the camera. Bestbatt.com quickly sent a replacement that worked for a few weeks, but then it failed during long exposures. During the failure, the red LED light at the back of the T2i would stay on even after turning the camera power switch off. I had to remove the adpater to get the LED light to turn off.

So, just to be perfectly clear here... There's no evidence from anyone who has ever used one of the cheepo $10 ack-e8 equivalent power adapters actually damaging the camera? By evidence, I mean to say, "beyond consumer insecurity." Worse case senerio (from experience of someone who has actually used one of these things) is just that it my fail to work or may work intermittently? Is that correct?

follow up question: any examples (once again, from someone who has actually used one of these $10.00 cheep ack-e8 equivalents) of no problems what so ever? Or is the general consensus that they are guaranteed to fail?

follow up to the follow up: any stories of the genuine canon ack-e8 being unreliable or totally perfect?

Geez....if you're that worried about the knock off, spring for the genuine Canon. Not worth you having a stroke to save $30 or $40.

If you're worried about the genuine Canon, then just buy an extra battery.

I've been using 3rd party Camera AC Adapters for almost 10 years. I've been using them on Canon DSLRs for 4 years. I just purchased my first 2 "Canon" brand AC adapters last week, at $70 a pop.

So, I opened up the beautiful, heavy duty packaging, and the soft plastic wrap, only to find one of the connectors (1/2 an inch from the power block "reinforcement) kinked to the point that it was barely connected to the block. Nice... The overall construction was no better than the "cheapies" I've been buying, except that the block was heavier. It also had a ferrite noise filter on the cable, which go for $1 each on Amazon.

It's simple electronics. As long as your Power Supply is rated 7.4v 2a, and it has an overload protection circuit (it's a requirement to sell them in the USA) the worst it can do is NOT supply your required DC current (7.4v is NOT a lot of juice, for reference) and your camera will stop. The only thing it will hurt is your pride, not your camera.

All that I can say is, in all the years (10) I've used "cheapie" aftermarket AC adapters, I've never had one fail on a shoot (and I use them all the time). Sure, they are not as heavy duty as the Canon unit, but the one I bought had the same grade power cable, and molded end, and even the battery block was a dead ringer (except for the Canon logo).

Now, I always carry 2 spares in my road case, just like I carry replacement bulbs for my Pro light, and extra stands, and you get the idea.

Sure, if you want to drop $70 on the OEM that's cool, but to me it's like dropping $60 each on extra batteries. Not necessary.
